Threadbare Drawing : Hoist

I find myself attracted to images that feel as if a bit is left unfinished.

If you flesh out the focal areas just enough, it provides material with which the viewer's imagination can use to fill the gaps. Viewer participation makes a drawing more exciting.

But, perhaps there's more to it than just that.

How do we perceive the world around us?

Do we see every scene before us as a canvas rendered in detail from top to bottom? I don’t—especially not when my attention is shifting quickly from one subject to another. While my brain may stitch together a patchwork of impressions, much remains vague and fleeting.

So, maybe it's more true to life, in some ways, to allow details to fade along the periphery. The more dramatic this fall-off, the more spontaneous and authentic the glimpse appears.

I could tighten the hands and feet. It's really just a matter of spending more time on the drawing. However, I think I'd lose a lot of the energy. I might even argue that a pose—full of movement—can look quite unnatural when tightly rendered. It risks appearing staged.

Perhaps this technique of line drawing is uniquely suited for capturing such impressions. Lines naturally fade in and out as they travel along a form. The broader strokes, as well, shift in and out. The focus is concentrated to areas of interest. There is no precedent set for more detail than is offered.
