The late Richard Schmid (1934–2021) has a new book out!
Any artist interested in traditional painting and drawing, especially in the alla prima method, is likely already familiar with Schmid. He was undoubtedly one of the most prolific and influential artists of our time.
His books are also among the very best, both in terms of content and production value. They’re pricey, but not unreasonably so, considering how large and packed with material they are. As a starting point, I always recommend Alla Prima, which is filled with key fundamental instruction, practical advice, and beautiful artwork. It’s one of the first books I suggest to any artist.
This latest release (and presumably his last) focuses on portraits and figure paintings. It was in development before his passing, so it includes his insightful personal commentary on each image.
I've just cracked mine open. It's another treasure trove!
