Schedule Moving Forward + Talking About Outcast
Added 2024-06-16 18:11:10 +0000 UTCMaking this post available to all tiers so people can decide what to do with their Patreon subscriptions. If you're Tier 1 or Tier 2, I recommend not reading below the 'Schedule Moving Forward' point section just yet, as there will be some spoilers in this post & potentially the comments section.
Schedule Moving Forward
The general plan is this: I'll take a few weeks to prepare the final Outcast book for its kindle release while also creating a detailed plot outline for the next story, which is currently set to be another fantasy LitRPG. After that I'll start writing again, and will post chapters to Patreon for the new story as they come.
I'm not sure if the schedule will remain one chapter a week or go back to two. It partially depends on the chapter length; two 6500+ word chapters a week isn't really feasible at this point. The rest of it depends on how burnt out I still am after taking it relatively easy for these next few weeks. To be honest...I was kinda underselling how burnt out I was in my earlier postings. Most of Outcast Book 6 was written in burnout mode (by that I mean over 200k words of content), and I had to work very hard to make sure the quality didn't dip as a result.
Regardless, I'm not stopping writing no matter what. There's nothing I'd rather be doing with my life, and I've got some ideas for the next series that I'm excited for. Some time spent not writing Outcast should help a lot with recharging my creative juices; much as I love the story, it went on a lot longer than I thought. It was originally meant to be a trilogy...whoops.
I'll make sure to keep you guys posted on things and give you exact dates as soon as I have everything ready.

The rest is for people who've read the final epilogue chapter.
The End of Outcast, and the Beginning of Something New
It feels weird writing this. I've felt weird since the moment I finalized the epilogue and its ending.
It's hard to fully express how much writing Outcast has changed my life. Without getting too personal - I'm in a much better place than I was before I started it, and that's entirely because of the fans who were kind enough to show enough support that I could make this a career instead of a pipe dream.
There's a reason I say 'thanks for reading' at the end of every chapter. I really mean it.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Although pragmatically, it kinda would've been more sensible for me to extend Outcast for a bit longer. It's rare that authors in the serial space manage to make a follow-up series that reaches the same level of success as their first hit. At the very least, I know some people would've enjoyed reading After The End content.
With that said...I really wanted to end the story at this point. Emotionally, I think it makes the most sense, and it's what feels the most fulfilling to me. After six books, Rob is finally home. Writing anything after that point would just dilute the impact.
Speaking of Rob - I'm a little nervous about moving on to a new main character. Rob was commonly cited as one of people's favorite parts of Outcast, and why the story worked for them. With that said, for the next story, I can't just write someone named Bob who acts exactly like the old protagonist. I don't think that would be satisfying for anyone. While the story genre will be the same, I want to explore different characters and themes. I think you guys are going to have a lot of fun with the ideas I'm cooking up.
Other than that...there's lots of stuff I could say about writing Outcast in general, but I wouldn't even know where to start, so consider this an impromptu AMA. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them.
And to everyone here, whether you started reading Outcast at Chapter 1, midway through, or just recently - thank you once again. It was a wild ride.

seems as part 3 of the epilogue is still locked for tire 1… weird…

2024-06-27 23:17:27 +0000 UTCYou start by writing something that appeals to you. If you can't sustain your passion for a story, you'll never finish it. Start building your story around a concept you really like. Personally, I edit each chapter right after finishing it, then again 1-2 weeks later to get a fresh perspective. I find that the two-tier editing system is very helpful for keeping consistent quality. 3000 words to 5000 words is a good chapter length. Most serial stories go for 3000 to keep a consistent update pace.

2024-06-23 22:12:20 +0000 UTCI have a lot of behind-the-scenes numbers for stuff like that. Most of it stays hidden because I didn't want the series to get bogged down in numbers, but the ridiculously sized excel sheet I have would shock people if they saw it.

2024-06-23 22:11:54 +0000 UTCThe first couple books took about 4-6 months for each. The later books took longer due to me spending more time on quality control and improving my writing/editing process. Book 6 especially took a while just because it was LONG.

2024-06-23 22:10:45 +0000 UTCWhat we don’t get The Adventure of Roy? But seriously, I really lost myself in the series. Often especially with longer series the quality of a part drops off in between but I didn't have that feeling at all with Outcast. Towards the end of every Thursday I was very happy that the new part was here and very disappointed that it was still so long until the next one.

2024-06-20 10:33:02 +0000 UTCHow long did it take to write out the first couple of books? I'm always curios to know how long these things take in the backlog before being pushed out to the people.

2024-06-19 05:33:22 +0000 UTCI found this bored out of my mind scrolling through HFY I think on Reddit and checked in on Rob and the others doing a newly spawned undead dungeon. litrpg was new so I checked it out. I now am addicted to numbers going up and characters surviving things they have no right to. You were the reason I even started to use Patreon in the first place because I didn't want to wait for the next book to come out. So from the bottom of my heart thank you for writing such an amazing story for the world to read. So good I had to read it thrice. For a question, how do you keep track of how strong somebody would be based on how many stat points they have? As in, how many points in strength before they punch through brick walls and accidentally crush door knobs.

2024-06-17 11:54:42 +0000 UTCI really enjoyed the story. Initially, I had a rough time in the beginning with chapter 1 because the way you described things was so different from what I had grown up with but I insisted and oh man, your style has grown on me. So, my question relates more to an aspiring novelist since I hope to fully make my own story someday. How do I start? Where should I start? How do I proofread better? How should I revise a chapter correctly? How many characters per chapter is the goal? I know that’s more than one question and each author does it differently but it would be of great help if I had a blueprint from an author whose style I enjoy.

2024-06-17 07:33:08 +0000 UTCNot at the moment, no. I'm not 100% ruling out revisiting that idea down the road, but for now I'd like to work on a different story.

2024-06-17 03:29:12 +0000 UTCThe comic had some internal delays, but it's now in full production and should come out sometime this year. I've seen previews of the first few chapters and it's turning out pretty great! Can't share anything more than that though.

2024-06-17 03:27:26 +0000 UTCThe biggest inspirations I can think of are Wheel of Time, Worm, and Final Fantasy XIV. Those - and a lot of other stories - formed a melting pot of preferences that Outcast drew from (most of the time subconsciously). Some sections of the story had more direction inspirations. For example, Elatra's edge of the world was inspired by Subnautica, and the Dhalerune Mines segment was inspired by the Deep Road in Dragon Age. Speaking of which, definitely a big fan of the DA series, and I hope Veilguard is good. I'm cautiously optimistic for it. I have also read Hitchhiker's and some of Discword and enjoyed both a lot.

2024-06-17 03:25:07 +0000 UTCThanks for explaining why you ended it like you did, but to me, it feels like book 6 actually ended on chapter 270.3. It doesn't feel like an epilouge imo. It feels like the regular end to the story, and the epilouge is still yet to come, yk the 7 days, 7 months, and 7 years after kind of thing. Oh don't forget Rob and Keiras wedding either!

2024-06-16 21:24:01 +0000 UTCMy only question is. Will we get something like the earth spin off we had with Jason?

2024-06-16 20:57:16 +0000 UTCI think bob really killed it this chapter with his silent stature and harsh stoicism. Good choice

2024-06-16 20:46:41 +0000 UTCThank you so much for your work Kami... Every time I saw the notification that a new chapter was released, I was immediately overjoyed. I have no doubt whatever you have cooked up will live up, if not exceed our expectations in any case. You did set amhigh bar though 😘 I have one question - at some point, and correct me if I'm misremembering, you mentioned a webcomic adaptation of Outcast. Was that project scrapped? Thank you again for an exciting, awesome, otherworldly adventures. And take care of yourself, however long you need. We'll be here waiting for your return!

2024-06-16 20:04:46 +0000 UTCThank you, once again, for writing it! I truly enjoyed every chapter, including the ending, which i absolutely agree was the right place to end it. Robs new future, and the problems and solutions we as fans can imagine happening, works best if it stays our imagination/fanfic, imho. I look forward to your other work, both current and upcoming. I only have so much time/energy to read, but I hope to get into skill thief now that outcasts ended. as for questions: Favorite authors/inspiration? familar with Hitchhikers guide, the "increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhikers Trilogy"? Discworld? Are you excited for Dragon Age Veilguard? played the series? Video game inspirations?
