Hollow Knight Rescore Patreon Feedback!

Hi Patrons! I've got a special video for you all today, and I'm looking for feedback on this! I'm trying out another type of video on my channel that combines video game music with the original music that I've been writing lately: rescoring an existing video game! I chose Hollow Knight for this test run, and wrote 4 new pieces for the game as underscore, imagining that the game was scored using jazz.

I would love some feedback on this video before it goes live this coming Saturday! I've already made note of some obvious errors (instrument videos accidentally being black because I deleted them by accident, and muting some game SFX when I'm narrating), but I'd love some feedback on the general narrative structure of the video, and if you find it interesting to watch! You can leave your feedback here on this post!

I'm curious to see if you guys like this format - I had a lot of fun making it but MAN this was a challenge! Let me know what you think :)

Haha thank you! I'm hopeful that this structure of video creates a substantive enough narrative arc to get people to watch all the way through. If not, I agree that it does have potential to be split into smaller-form stuff, though I'm not sure the exact best way to do that without it being repetitive for people who watch the full thing. Maybe I'll take inspiration from channels that do long podcasts and have clips from said podcast. I think the name thing could be a little confusing at first too, but people will probably figure it out, haha.

Hey Korbin, thanks! 1. I agree - it could work in short form as well. I opted to make this a long-form video since YouTube tends to reward long-form, engaging content, and I wanted to try my hand at that. Maybe the individual song re-score format could work if I picked a specific location from a game? The idea I had for this video was to rescore enough songs to give an idea of how a whole soundtrack might work in this style, even though I'm just doing music for 4 pieces in this case, but I agree, there's potential for that. Was even thinking about making some shorter cuts for other social media platforms, haha. 2. I could try the commentary in subtitles for some spots! I've already locked in the final edit for this video, in which I increased the length of the sections in which the gameplay shows fullscreen and meshes with the music, but maybe those sections could be even longer. I'm hesitant to do the subtitles thing, since I wanted this to be something that people could consume in its entirety by listening to it, sort of like a podcast or audiobook, and subtitles would prevent that (unless they just gave information that was non-substantial), but I guess we'll see how people like it!

This was a really neat video idea and I think pairs well with how you've been delving more into original compositions on the channel! I think it would be great to see more of these types of videos in the future. Big fan of the flugelhorn, and really enjoyed Splashes of Sorrow. Some comments. (1) I enjoyed watching it all the way through, but I think it easily could be broken up into individual videos for individual songs to make it more digestible. I think also having individual videos would then allow you to play the full piece of music at the end, which is something I was expecting (it seemed like at most we only got maybe 15-30 sec of uninterrupted listening to the pieces) (2) I think it was informative to hear you talk through your process about how you decided instrumentation and inspiration, but also I think that it made it a bit harder to really listen to the new tracks and hear how well they mesh with the game. Perhaps you could show more extended portions of gameplay with your music, and put some of your commentary in subtitles?

I also really like the concept and I hope other people have the attention span to watch it. If not I could also imagine this being splitted in multiple videos with less description (although I'm actually interested in your path of thoughts). Two minor things I recognized: 1. You introduce yourself as "insaneintherain" and then call yourself with your real name a minute later. Could be confusing for people who don't know who Carlos is. 2. Maybe you could give a little (maybe visual?) hint when you switch from the original composition to your own score.

Thank you! I specifically tried to make the video so someone with barely any prior experience with music could still follow along and enjoy the video.

Yes!! Love this, the moods you created and the inspiration behind it (I could hear the GoGo Penguin influence at some point in the final track...!) Really makes me think more people might get into jazz if it appeared in places like video games. Would watch another of these but recognize how much effort goes into the production! Also wow, the look of this game really reminds me of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind--and Nightmare Ned, which was a wildly weird and moody game from my childhood (https://youtu.be/NZkYkruqfbA). I only recently learned of Hollow Knight from a hilarious video from the Drawfee folks (I'm like four years behind on most cool things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADCOaKdocg0)

I really love this video! You explaining your thoughts and feelings about both the original score and your own compositions kept me thrilled throughout the entirety of the video and built up so much excitement inside of me for the actual tracks. As someone with barely any musical education it was super interesting for me to see your approach to composing these new pieces. As a fan of Hollow Knight, I absolutely love the results! They fit the scenes really well. Especially the eeriness conveyed in Lonely Nomad gave me goosebumps. I'd definitely be excited if you did more of this.
