if I recall, the speakers used in these looked very similar to the ones on the white imacs, which also were prone to the surround deteriorating over time. Side note, I find it amusing this feature has sorta returned in the form of miracast. I once had a client ask if she could use her personal laptop as a secondary monitor to her work laptop, and the answer was actually a resounding yes! Cast to it over windows' built in miracast client and you'll have a second monitor.

2023-10-07 01:26:15 +0000 UTCI wonder a couple of things. Does the system output the incoming HDMI over it's outgoing HDMI output at all? Could be quite a useful thing for presentations. Second, maybe they could have done the switcher for the audio similar to the switcher for the video. Have a audio switch in the dedicated "video monitor" mode to output to the speakers (at a fixed volume, so it's controlled by the transmitting device) when started in display only mode, but also have a tap on the soundcard if the machine was booted so it can be played back muxed with the system audio, so maybe an extra relay or analogue transfer circuit would keep it relatively simple, without going the "worse" capture card generic app latency way. Wouldn't be 100% perfect but would allow a low-powered monitor mode for a 6 hour halo session and still let it work when you were using the system as an input device.

2023-09-25 23:54:25 +0000 UTCI wouldn't be surprised if those speakers are experiencing foam rot, where the foam surrounds on the drivers are disintegrating. I had a TV that had foam rot happen, replaced the speakers and it works just fine now
