"I'm just glad my family is safe," he said. "I never wanted anyone to get hurt. I was just protecting my wife and son. Any father would have done the same."
The reporters ate it up.
"He's a hero," one of them said to her cameraman. "Defended his family against a home invader. That's the hot story of today."
Yamamoto's wife wiped tears from her eyes while she was in her wheelchair, "We were so scared. If he hadn't been there..."
His son nodded, clutching his father's hand tighter. "Dad saved us."
Yamamoto looked down at his son with what seemed like love and pride.
"I'd do anything for you two," he said. "Anything."
The reporters kept taking pictures.
The family walked to their car, surrounded by well-wishers and supporters. Yamamoto helped his wife into the passenger seat, buckled his son into the back, and got behind the wheel.
As he started the engine, he glanced in the rearview mirror.
For just a second, his smile became cold and satisfied.
Then it was gone, replaced by the loving father act once more.
He pulled out of the parking lot, waving to the reporters one last time.
None of them noticed the figure standing at the edge of the crowd.
Far enough away to be invisible. Close enough to see everything.
A young man in a black hoodie, his face shadowed, his hands buried in his pockets.
Green eyes watched the car drive away with an expression that contained nothing at all.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Nothing at all.
Just emptiness... endless emptiness. The emptiness that would consume Takeshi Yamamoto.
