Do not use the Apple iOS app for Patreon!!!

In November, Patreon will forcibly change everyone's membership to a subscription based membership where instead of paying at the beginning of the month you will pay on the day you signed up. But that's not the terrible bit. Apple will now enact a 30% fee if you use the Apple iOS Patreon app.

If you are currently using the App and already have a membership, you will not have to pay the fee. But if you ever unpledge and then come back to my Patreon through this app, you will be charged a 30% fee. So if you pledge through an Apple product, do it through an internet browser and NOT THE APP.

This is absolutely disgusting on Apple's part and I will do my best to make sure everyone knows not to use the app.

I have also considered switching from Patreon to another service like Subscribestar or KoFi. I do not think I'm prepared to make that large of a jump just yet, but I will be looking at other services and weighing the options. If I decide to go down this route I will make a further announcement.

I run an entire business dedicated to getting people to switch to Linux so this will add more fuel to the fire. The only way to get corporations to stop being greedy is to stop them from existing by no longer giving them money. It happened to Blockbuster, it can happen to Apple too.

Thank you for the memo.

LaughinGoron

Thank you for the heads up, I appreciate you looking out for us. I really hope this trend of greed from corporations eventually die but I'm not holding my breath

Just be careful with other subscription services. From personal experience, places like subscribstar are kind of dodgy when it comes to pricing for countries outside of the US. I got charged 30 something dollars for a what was shown as AUD $14 subscription.

I really, REALLY wish Patreon would just give subscribers the choice of when they want to be billed. I MUCH prefer having one chunk at the beginning of the month rather than a bunch of small ones scattered throughout. I know exactly why they're doing it, though. A bunch of smaller payments throughout the month rather than one big payment up front makes it harder to keep track of how much you're spending and thus incentivizes you to spend more.

Mark

It really isn't. Gumroad doesn't allow NSFW content anymore.

Mark

Seems like they are doing that everywhere

Explorer

Oof, that's pretty greedy! Guess I should have expected as much. Thanks for letting us know Gena!

Drake

I know it's not an appealing one but gumroad is also an option

Heard about this, thankfully I sub through browser only (my phone is basically just a glorified messager and YouTube player anyways) but dang this blows :<

SuperFromND

Im on a android haha, but thanks anyway.

Felix

Despite having android thanks for the warning, I'll make sure to spread it.

Fang Whitewolf

I feel like such a gen Xer when I say, “why would I download the app when the mobile site works fine”, but I keep finding more reasons to support that train of thought

esbeth

that's just apple doing apple things

Bunny

I have android thankfully but thanks for letting us know. It shows you reallcare about your supporters!

CayCay

OK, thank you and good luck for the rest (please, don't stop!)

MikelKanik

Just the iOS app. This is Apple being greedy

Whygena

Just a little question: it's only for the IOS app? Nothing for android?

MikelKanik

Got it👍

DustyX7

Just don't use the app at all

Whygena

Thanks for the info 👍

Extremethewolf7

Just don't use the App. Login on on the internet broswer

Whygena

That's awful, thank you for bringing this up for those that do use iOS, terrible practices all around with apple

Nisp

But doe it mean we have to un pledge and re pledge or as long as we don’t use the app, log out, and maybe delete it, will be fine? Because at this point, I’m really tired to redoing stuff.

DustyX7

Better yet, don't use iOS! They only keep with these abusive pratices because people keep supporting them!

Victor Kappel

Apple has their fee everywhere. 4 years ago Epic Games tried to get around this and got banned for 5 years

Nikolomi

Would you happen to know if it’s any different if you: pledge on another platform and just use iOS for viewing, would the charge still apply?

HXR

Christ. Apple just loves squeezing every drop of change out of their customers, don't they?

IkeFanboy64

Damn

That's Corn

dang, that's messed up 😥 good thing I don't use ios

will the fish
