Early & Ad Free: BULLET-PROOF Steering System for Our Aluminum Catamaran 💣 Building Our Own Boat Pt. 11

Hey Patreon fam! We're back with our first post-flip episode, and we're excited to share a bit of a different side of the build with you. Before we can start welding in the plates for the floors/decks/etc. we have a few big jobs that need to be done, and today we're going to be installing our steering system. I am wayyyy too excited about how cool it is 😂 Steering is one of those things that might not be as flashy as other parts of planning and designing the boat...if you've done it correctly, you don't really notice it. But it's one of the most critical systems both for safety and comfort, and I think we've really found a winner here with our Jefa setup. In this video we also touch on our hybrid electric propulsion system (don't worry there will be a full deep-dive episode on this in the future!) and I'm curious what questions you have about it- let us know in the comments below and we can make sure we touch on everything when start putting that episode together.

Sending all our love and gratitude as always,

Brian, Kazza, & Sierra

I remember when you guys got a hot seat on Maggie how will you cool Delos 2.0? JerryU

Hey Skip, yes there is. Two actually- one for each rudder!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Ken, yes absolutely. But luckily both engine rooms are equally spaced (within a small margin depending on location of specific equipment) that I can go weight for weight. However larger things like the batteries can be placed closer to the centerline so there will need to be some tweaking and adjusting here I suppose.

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks for sticking with us for so long Ray, we really appreciate that!

Sailing SV Delos

Yes, absolutely agree and done!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Courtney! Just ye' ole' backup tillers direct to the rudder stock. But yes, they can in fact be isolated quite easily if some part of the system fails.

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Brian what is your back up steering system? seems that if the chain would become jammed you could have and issue. Is there a way to isolate the rudders?

SV Trippin'

To hear your thought process behind each system and then see the implementation into the design is an amazing journey in itself !

Michael Williams

I suggest you build removable water tight inspection plates over critical components of the steering system

FRANCIS DEL VECCHIO

Hitting this milestone of your first system install must have been incredibly exciting!

Tom Caban

😜

Andrea and Gisela

Yes, you are correct! I stand embarrassed and corrected.....

Sailing SV Delos

electric motors are not engines

Eric James

I keep flashing back to putting everything back together in the shipyard... then going on sea trials!

Michael Williams

Love the well engineered steering. Love the ‘Do it right - do it once’ philosoph. Not sure about Dan’s steel-rule-hammer at 15:29 😂🤣. Using a square might give it more precision Ha-ha 🤣😂

Jason Newcombe

Catching up on Delos video today. I like to save and binge so I'm not left waiting for the next one. I know you keep a lot of spare parts onboard in case anything goes wrong. Is there room in the starboard engine side to store some of those parts and offset the weight even more?

Mike Medina

Im seventy this year. I’m a EE by degree, but Industrial Automation was my career. Home remodeling, building multiple decks, automotive repairs, and now gardening in retirement. The journey of learning new things keeps my mind (and active body) healthy. Watching Brian, Karin, and the Delos crews learn, adapt, and persevere is why I’ve been a Patron since you arrived in Madagascar. Brian, you have turned into a capable Mechanical Engineer and a creative Mechanic in your time aboard Delos. Never stop learning!

Ray Norman

When balancing port and starboard don't you need to allow for the distance from the centerlne? 100 kilos near the centerline may balance 10 kilos near the edge of the hull.

Ken

How interesting can a technical explaination be? Well, leave it up to Professor Brian. You are capable to make dry subjects into interesting ones. Thanks to a good sence of humor and excellent explaination🤪🧐

Jeanne H. Mathieu

I really appreciate all the thought Brian and Dan put into every element of this build. Maybe between the two of them, they can build a new boat that isn’t a pain in the ass to own for the first couple of years!

Mark Gumprecht

Im also happy to see the progress and witness the build of a historic boat! To me it sure is! Thanx and next is yet to be seen!

Thomas Lengel

Michael, it was great seeing you at the Sailboat Show! : - )

It's that time again! It is Sailing Vessel Delos Friday, so, obviously I must hit that button called PLAY! : - ) BTW - I got my first (and maybe last) sail of the year this last Tuesday 10/22/24. Only 1 1/2 hours and 4.5 NM sailed on Keuka Lake here in central New York State. : - ) It was a very nice sail, but my 4 hp Evenrude outboard refused to start. That made getting out of the boat ramp/launch area a bit difficult. But it was sunny and close to 80 degrees F - summer in October! Oh, and it was great seeing all of you guys at the Annapolis Sailboat Show! About this episode, . . . some may say you were giving us the shaft, steering us in the wrong direction, and yanking our chain. But then they may think they can make their sailboat go by blowing wind into their own sails from their own lungs! LOL This was a great explanation of how Delos 2.0 will be able to sail circles around other boats! : - )

Scott C. Wise

I would be almost positive Brian has a plan B. If not, the Beauty of a metal boat is you can literally build out what you need in minutes to hours as opposed to a Fiber plastic boat. I am certain Brian will store raw aluminum on that boat and a welder most definitely.

Joe and Karrie Cirino

You guys are doing it right! It’s a tank and you guys will be able to go anywhere! This is how you build a boat!

Joe and Karrie Cirino

Love the rock solid steering design. Question - is there a provision for an emergency tiller and access? Meaning if you lose a rudder (or the gearbox fails) can you get a temporary tiller on either of the rudder post shafts? I know you will probably never need it but as we all know s**t happens.

Skip Vail

I hope that Dan's order book is now years deep. I don't think you could have found a better partner for this build.

Scott St. Clair

This is so exciting, one major system done, check. Everything you do from now on will add up fast. I guess you will soon start roughing in the plumbing, electrical conduits, and tanks. Way to go Bri and Kazza! Also, Sierra is growing up so fast, I guess being around other children is a blessing for her, cheers from Montreal.

Stéphane

Proud to be a part of this historic build … have a great week
