Early & Ad Free: This Part Could Make or Break Our Catamaran (Building Our Own Boat Part 7)

Ahoy Delos Tribe! We're back this week with a biiiiiig project for ya! This is by far the most difficult part of the build we've done so far, and it's also one of the most critical. Today's video is all about putting together the longeron and cross beam together (if you have no idea what a longeron is, you're about to find out 🤓). It's already a tricky enough process as it is, but we encounter a few more bugs in some of the components and we have to do a bit of improvisation. But as always Dan and the team don't miss a beat, and we're able to get creative and work through it all! The problem solving process of building and maintaining a boats is something I truly love...of course there are times I'm swearing and questioning our life decisions, but the feeling when you crack the code and see it all come together is really like nothing else! We also cover another topic that we've had quite a few questions/comments about which is about the helmets and safety gear we use- let us know in the comments below if you have more questions about them.

We also want to introduce you to the newest member of the Delos editing team who put this episode together- Say hello to Nerea! She's best friends with Jordan, and is also a sailor/diver/editor so she's definitely living the Delos Tribe Vibe 🙌 We are super grateful to have her helping us as these build videos have been taking a bit of extra love to really come together.

Sending lots of love, hugs, and gratitude from all of us!

Brian, Kazza, & Sierra 🥰

Very cool. Yes, you are definitely going to need some noise reduction for your anchor chain, and you need to know how you are going to replace it when it wears out!

SV Trippin'

Just curious, because I am not smart enough to know. Will you have to line the longeron or chain locker with something so the stainless-steel chain does not corrode sitting on the aluminum?

Jeff Ridenhour

Awesome guys! Can’t wait to see you in Annapolis

Elviajede Bohemia

Do all the larger spaces.. like the front lockers, have sloped bottoms to facilitate water draining somewhere?

Jeanne H. Mathieu

It's part of the Delos soul!

William Flower

Hey Terry, It's different for different parts of the boat. For example all the CNC cut frames in the bilge, wet lockers, etc. have what we call mouse holes in all the corners. This facilitates fabrication, but it also provides a channel for condensation or unwanted water to run to where you can handle (like the bilge) instead of pooling in one place. We'll have two low spots in each bilge (and a total of 3 pumps per side) to handle any unwanted water. I haven't checked on the design of the outside eyebrows in particular so I'll need to wait until we're back before commenting on this. But generally the idea is to allow it to run to someplace where it can be handled. Cheers! Brian

Sailing SV Delos

Question.. the boat, being out of aluminum has all these voids inside the structures.. like the front side eyebrows off the roof. One little hole and they fill with water. How do you keep water out - and how do you get it out? Thanks.

Terry Haan

Hey Michael- we'll definitely be showing more of this in an upcoming episode where I fit the windlass and chain. Cheers- Brian

Sailing SV Delos

Ha ha Jordan made that thumbnail and she of all people should have gotten that!

Sailing SV Delos

Oh, and as to the Click Bait title graphic, . . . That's what she (a virgin) said! LOL

Scott C. Wise

Seriously interesting watching Delos 2.0 come together. The assembly process has to be so precise and my mind is blow just thinking about the engineering that goes into this. How do you even??? Observation: You have the necessary uniform, the helmet and a light saber of sorts. You’re basically a Jedi warrior constructing your own Starfighter. LOL

Robert Palumbo

Glad you enjoyed Barbara 🥰🥰🥰

Sailing SV Delos

He really is so skilled, it's been so amazing to learn from him! And of course he always keeps us laughing and smiling, we really couldn't have asked for more!

Sailing SV Delos

Wanky Longeron is definitely not what you want!

Sailing SV Delos

Haha it's a goodie for sure 😂

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Colleen 🥰🥰🥰

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Lowell, we did touch a tiny bit on Dan's background in the very first build episode, but yeah that would be cool to go more in depth into!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Heather, thanks so much for your support and we are so stoked to have you along on the journey with us for all these years 🥰 Glad you're loving the build series, it's been such a wild ride and the videos are super interesting to put together for us!

Sailing SV Delos

He definitely keeps things entertaining around the shop, we love him so much!

Sailing SV Delos

They do give you a little category in our revenue analytics that comes from premium subscribers (it's verrrry small 😂) would be interesting to know the breakdown on that vs normal ads

Sailing SV Delos

Glad you enjoyed this one, we've been getting lots of feedback that people are loving the nitty gritty details, I think we will keep moving in that direction more and more!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much Jeanne, and I think we can never take the woohoo out or there will be anarchy in the Delos tribe 😂 Too many people (including us!) absolutely LOVE IT!

Sailing SV Delos

Yep that's her, the dream team for sure! And Star Welders I love it....Sierrraaaaa, I am your Fatheeeeerrrr 😂

Sailing SV Delos

Excellent cutting and story telling…yohoooo…please do not cut that one out any time soon🥰🥰🥰

Jeanne H. Mathieu

Very cool loved the detailed explanation

Lisa & Claude

I have premium so it’s always ad free. Wonder how that works in to revenue calculation.

Eray Ekici

How well does the longeron fit? “It fits like a finger in the bum”…. Gotta love Dan!!!!

Tony Gariepy

I've been a fan since 2019 Watching on YT I've gotten a bit better with my money and am now able to join here and Spencer 4 videos a month. I pray for more resources and I'll share more! I'm loving the fabrication and details of the building process! Yay! And congratulations 🎊

Heather Mac

For some reason I am drawn to wanting more info on that anchor - how it nests up in the longeron (it was hard to get a good, understandable view.

Michael Williams

Is Nerea from Jordan's days on Sylfia? Two Dream Girls eh? That head gear is really tricked out ..... Star Welders! As a Licensed MD Property Line Surveyor for 37 years ... often staking out high rise structures for Library's and such ....... I don't mind saying that Architects were our sworn enemy ....... always leaving critical dimensions and proposed angles off of plans. Once we started getting their CADD drawings it was better .... they were always in inches and feet on plans ...... we had to convert everything to decimal feet to add, stake out and check things. It was always a challenge. The actual builders often challenged US when they made errors reading the funky plans that we didn't even make. We always charged them ..... when checking things that they got wrong. That label problem you ran into was a hot mess. See you soon ..... Keep 'em flyin

Bonne Mike

Those welding helmets are very cool. I haven't seen those in the fab shops I've been around. When Kazza had the camera inside the shield, I could see the shop on the back of the camera and it made me wonder what was going on. Maybe on one of the episodes you could go over Dan and Stradbroke's background. Did he start off working in a shipyard? The Welding 101 class has been excellent.

lowell mccormick

Welcome Nerea. Love the new intro! Very BUILD-Y!

Colleen Balch

Loved the "peaches"!

David Seabrook

I'd be standing by my fore stay hanking on my jib, but It's SV Delos Friday and I need to hit PLAY! Weld, weld, weld, what have we here? Lots of welding! I'm glad the errors could be figured out and corrected. You don't want a wanky longeron! Hey, and a pretty good editing job too. : - )

Scott C. Wise

Each episode I watch increases my respect for Dan. He is meticulous and hardworking which is what you want when your lives will depend on it! Although he sometimes spouts "unintelligible Australian", he is a genius machinist. How fortunate that you found him and his crew.

Jeff Mack

I love all this info!! Thank you for sharing 🥰🥰
