Hey hey friends! We loved seeing all your comments and questions on our post the other day π₯° And one of them came up in our work yesterday so we decided to film everything and walk you through the process! Thanks to Sandi Romih who asked us about how we use the english wheel to bend the aluminum plates to create the shape of the hull...so here ya go! We hope you all enjoy this little bonus video, and we will see ya tomorrow with another brand new episode hot off the press!
As always, sending all our love and gratitude to each and every one of you!
Brian, Kazz, & Sierra
That is pure pleasure to watch

I love it! I've seen English wheels mentioned in videos all over the web, but this is the first time I've seen it used. Not only that... explained in deep detail! I've spent a dozen years in machining and another 35 inspecting/managing quality, but this was all new to me. Especially "stretching in a direction right or left". Wow!

Absolutely fascinating! It reminds me of fine woodworking done by a master craftsman versus an expensive industrial machine. They look the same but an expert can tell the difference. The precision and skill required is amazing. I can certainly see why you picked this design and this boat builder.

Good insight in the craft, thx for sharing

I loved this and truly a special skill. Will be cool to see how they join 28 panels together and make for a perfectly smooth hull. Boy y'all will have some very long days but hang in there! Cheers, Skip

As a long time Youtube watcher this is exactly the kind of video that makes me happy to be a Patreon. A fascinating insight into just how much thought and labour goes into building a boat. Can't wait to see these for stuff like electrical/electronics!

Very cool metal forming. Dan has incredible skills! Brian needs to always wear gloves, minor injuries will slow down your progress!

We use double the thickness of the material to be bent to be the tightest radius we bend to. For example, we would bend 3/8" thick plate to 3/4" inside radius. Any tighter and the material would start fracturing. Also, you have to use the correct alloy for the material to be bent. Some alloys accept bending better than others.

Dan is a great character. Love his accent, skill and work ethic. The shirt is a great idea. Hard not to ask what it's about. Thanks for the always great content. Just enough detail mixed with time lapse. You really have a great sense for what works.

Thanks bill! From what Iβve understood bending aluminum up to a point does not weaken it almost the opposite it strengthens it. But of course if you bend it to much (way more then what we will) it can potentially break it.

WOW That looks complicated ....... but AutoCAD (or what ever) makes templates a snap! Back in the 70-80's my computer Dad (Capt Bob) was working with sail makers to get the bow into sails being cut using CPU printed templates .... and he was getting free sails out of it . The curved metal fab is sort of like those early sail days. Brian .... please get some good gloves. Metal is not forgiving. Keep 'em flyin

From a total layman's stance, wouldn't working the metal like that weaken it? This is cool though. Love the shirt as well.

So wonderful! I'm happy I didn't have to bend over backwards to witness this process. But I think Ben Dover may have had to! LOL

Wonderful nerdy English wheel coverage! Jay Leno says the hardest part of car restoration is finding someone that can use a wheel for old metal body panels. I tried one while building a small airplane. Realized I shouldn't fly in anything I built π
