Delos 2.0 Update (Outside Galley, Revised Roof, Water Catchment)

A HUGE thanks to our amazing Patron Chris and his son Max! A few weeks ago we put out a post asking for help and Chris kindly volunteered his time. Together they took on the task of updating our Rhino .3DM surface model to incorporate the latest design features from our structural model. The surface model is used to show how the design will look and the structural model shows the actual parts are used and how they are assembled together. So in essence the structural model is used to cut and assemble the actual pieces, while the surface model is used to produce renders and show us what it will look like. When the structural model is update by the design team it takes additional time and labor to keep the surface model in sync. Since we run on a pretty tight budget Chris volunteered his time and used the opportunity to teach his son Max a very cool skill, saving us quite a bit of labor cost in the process. It's awesome they were able to work together on this :) Nice work you two!

If you look closely you'll notice:

1) A revised and larger roof surface that provides additional solar capacity, water catchment, and protection from the weather. We now have one solar company that says we can fit an astonishing 5KW of solar power on the roof alone!!!

2) Revised roof supports for a more modern look, moved outwards to make more space along the aft bulwark. These roof supports will also serve as cable runs for solar wiring and to route rain water into our tanks below.

3) The aft bulwark has been revised to include an outside galley! So we will have a stove, BBQ, sink, and even a fridge which will just be pure joy for tropical living :)

4) The aft bulwark also includes a dive compressor, dive tanks, equipment lockers, life raft, and even an integrated fuel tank for the dinghy which is something I have dreamed about for years.

5) We have also decided to make the rudders invisible, and will utilize a new electric thrust vectoring technology! J/K Just making sure you guys are paying attention :)

Please let us know your thoughts below and a huge thanks to Chris and Max for their help!

Hi Brian, I love the alterations, especially the additional roof and tender stowage solution. What a great idea to put all the things you only use while anchored in the place that you stow the tender. I do have one more suggestion. How about a tiller and bucket seats for the back. Maybe not even full controls, but something that you can two man just to be able to ride the rail and steer from the back. If you have emergency tillers anyway, why not put a bucket seat on the rail (even removable...)?

William Houck

Hi Brian are you going to use in mast furliers sorry about the spelling. Also will you consider a mizzenmast ? JerryU

JerryUlmer

yeah, I'd be looking 50' as well just for the headroom. So what sold you on David's designs as opposed to some of the other aluminum cat designs out there?

Matt Wiseman

Hey Matt- I went aboard David's previous cat design Elcie back in Annapolis at the boat show in 2019 and really liked it! Just had a good feel, well proportioned, good lines... But it was too big. So when he mentioned building a 53 foot version I was all ears.

Sailing SV Delos

Out of curiosity, what made you go with *this* designer. I was looking online at some of the Bruce Roberts aluminum cat designs and they looked pretty nice as well. Admittedly I *love* the up front cockpit, but other than that?

Matt Wiseman

Can‘t wait to see the final solution. I own a 49ft Aluminum monohull from 1991 and I am constantly working on improving sheeting, sail handling and so on. Meanwhile I can fully operate the boat single handed while my wife is doing something else (or - of course - vice versa ) :-)

Michael Wilke

The dinghy *should* slide out enough on the mounts. But this might not be practical, we’ll just have to see and adjust the position accordingly.

Sailing SV Delos

Hey John, Yes thats an excellent Idea. We are indeed putting some thoughts into this. Yes, I have a huge list of ideas. We’ll see how many I can make happen!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Jerry- We opted for dagger boards. So we lose a little pointing and speed downwind. But we get more space inside, reduced complexity snd moving parts, and we can dry her out without worrying about the hull. Plus then the water tanks can also go in the keel. Always tradeoffs in boats!

Sailing SV Delos

If he wants her, but I think Delos cabin arrangement is much better for a cruising boat than a sailing school. Just doesn’t have enough sea bunks for his purposes I think…

Sailing SV Delos

The Aluminum is 5083, marine grade. If left alone it naturally builds up a protective layer of oxidation that actually protects it from forming further oxidation. So the plan is just to leave it bare, except for parts of the deck. We’ll probably use adhesive pads or deck paint so we don’t burn out feet!

Sailing SV Delos

Yeah, it is a tricky one. With the cars on the cabin top if we want all sail handing up front we’ll need to double back to the forward cockpit. Our mainsheet on Delos goes through multiple blocks (4:1) and it works pretty well and this will be 2:1 so I hope its not too much. we will have to see. Happy to try and modify as we go!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Ray, and so good to hear from you again!

Sailing SV Delos

Greetings, Brian and Kazza. I haven't written to you for some time. Still following though. Your decision to change from monohull to catamaran seems to be a good choice though big change. It's so impressive of what you and Kazza intend to build. Your ideas for design changes(upgrades) are awesome. Needless to say, all of us in the Tribe are looking forward to following your progess and seeing you happy in your new sailing vessel. All the best to you. Kindest regards, Ray

Ray Lehman

Looks absolutely fantastic. I wonder, where the Genoa / Code 0 sheets are going? Will they also be directed to the front operating area? Might cause a lot of friction… Will you put a coat of varnish over the Aluminum?

Michael Wilke

When D2 is launched will D1 go to Brady?

JerryUlmer

When sailing upwind will D2 use dagger boards? JerryU

JerryUlmer

Roof access; can you integrate some handrail that can double as a footstep when needing to get up? Im sure you guys are going through a laundry list of design points! Enjoy the process, looking great!

john eikevik

Spectacular design. Is there any concern that the life-raft auto deployment might be blocked by the dinghy in the stowed position?

Stephen

Hey Papa SV Delos! We just started chatting with them and haven’t made a decision to use them yet but its openwaterssolar.com

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Jerry, Actually there have been some changes to the bow we haven’t talked about yet. We moves to a free-standing prod which means the supports from the prod to the bow are no longer needed. The windlass sits just back from the catwalk, at the base of the mast in the chan locker. The chain runs inside the catwalk and the anchor is directly underneath, about 3-4 feet back from the front of the trampoline’s. We should be able to use the upgraded version of Mantus M1 so yes! It will be tight but I think we can pull it off.

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks for you kind words Clark, we think so too!

Sailing SV Delos

And who is the single company chosen to do the Solar?

Michael Trautman

Being something of a dinosaur / fossil or whatever, and a traditional wooden boat enthusiast, I've yet to see a cat that captures my imagination - until now. You guys have done it, even with all of the high tech gadgetry , she looks so very "pretty. " I find that remarkable. As usual, my hat is off to you guys. And thanks for keeping the creative fires burning.

Clark Robins

It's terrific to be on this journey with you. Thanks for making us part of your family!

Tom Worrell

This is what happens when you think about your next boat design for ten years the outcome is spot on. Well done 👍

Richard S Florence

Where will your ground tackle be housed? Will you continue to use your current anchor? JerryU

JerryUlmer

Yeah, apparently those layers were turned off when we did the render and I was so focused on how the sink and BBQ looked all shiny and stuff I totally missed a very important part of the boat not showing up :)

Sailing SV Delos

Yeah for sure, I got a nice fish cleaning station and salt water tap planned for that outside galley area :) It's basically a fancy BBQ with a few burners for the stove, which will double as a backup for the induction stove inside, sort of double use. Gonna be so fun to put together!

Sailing SV Delos

Thrust vectoring yeah!

Lewis Friedman ॐ

That's A LOT of boat there, Cap. From where will you fish? 2 galleys? IDK. I'm a cheap bastard. It would be very handy having a tap and sink to clean fish, wash gross hands, etc. Are you able to switch between sea/fresh at the tap? that may save water?? just spitballing.

Kevin Houghton

The prop answer leads me to another thought... what kind of power plant will D2 have? Are you going with hybrid systems like Distant Shores and be able to use regeneration off the props?

Bob Caverly

Yeah....secret weapon....no drag rudders!!

DVDesign

I thought that was a design feature David 🤣

Sailing SV Delos

Seems like the rudders are missing!!

DVDesign

I think we're realistically in the 2 year timeframe. We were thinking 5 years if we built in Sweden, but building in Australia with Stradbroke we're now thinking 2-ish....

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Bob thanks! The deck and block arrangement has everything lead to the forward cockpit, so the aft area will be purely about living and lounging. And the forward area all about sail handling. We'll have to see how the visibility is. I was just on a friend's seawind 1600 and he needed to go out to the side decks to see and trim the mainsail, and especially for raising and lowering. We will just have to see how the line of sights are. We have a roof over the forward cockpit but it leaves a large gap directly under the boom for line of sight to the luff of the main sail. I'm hoping this along with the windows in the cabin top will be sufficient. But since one of these isn't sailing yet it's a bit of guess work. Actually the steering system is very, very cool. It's a rack and pinion system from Jefa that uses torque tubes and gearboxes that turn rotational forces into linear forces. I saw it on another boat and was very impressed so I ordered the same one. Many more details to come on that. Regarding the props, we've had the AutoProp from Bruntons onboard Delos for the entire trip. I've been so impressed by it's auto-pitching performance that I decided to continue with their new version called the EcoStar which is specifically designed for a setup like ours. So they will be Bruntons EcoStar H6 props, 504mm (20"). The max props are also very nice, our friend loves theirs!

Sailing SV Delos

Ha ha yes I love that! Well I'm toying with the idea of keeping one tank for desalinator only that is plumbed for drinking, and having the other tank be for washing, showers, etc. that can be filled from either desal or the rain catchment. We'll see how complicated the plumping gets, but it would be cool to consider. I'm not sure on the wind generators actually. We get enough power on Delos now that they never actually spin up because the battery voltage is almost always full. And we'll have much more solar on this boat. I guess the thing to consider is that when we venture into high latitudes the solar will drop off significantly so wind might actually help quite a bit. We will see....

Sailing SV Delos

Maybe we should refer to it as The Probe or The Prod? :)

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Jerry, yes she will have two forestays but I'm not sure we will ever fly the self-tacking jin and the overlapping jib at the same time. We'll have to see how she does upwind.

Sailing SV Delos

Ahoy Mike! Ha ha no sorry that was just a joke... We actually accidentally had that layer turned off when we did the renders. They are indeed just standard and conventional rudders.

Sailing SV Delos

My thoughts are to use a marine-grade winch with forward/reverse capabilities that will pull both lines at the same time. Really looking forward to building and testing some of these ideas.

Sailing SV Delos

Wow that's awesome guys, well done on the solar setup.

Sailing SV Delos

Things sure have come a long way!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks David, yes quite the opposite. We're like yes- we want the helm to be absolutely protected.....

Sailing SV Delos

Yes absolutely!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks David, we think she's pretty as well!

Sailing SV Delos

Boats are always a tradeoff.... So in this case we really wanted straight shaft drives (no sail drives), but we also wanted to have the engines in a dedicated sealed off engine compartment (not placed under the bunks in the cabins), but we also didn't want to make the engine compartments so big that it took away from the livable space in the cabins. So a tradeoff is to angle the props. Nominal angle is normally around 7 degrees. On this design we're at 12 degrees to give clearance for everything. According to the calculation we'll lose about 1.5-2% efficiency from a completely horizontal prop like we have on Delos. So we decided that was the tradeoff we were willing to live with! Funny how things work out right?

Sailing SV Delos

Ha ha :)

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Bob- Yeah, it's pretty much as far back we could go (end of transoms) without affecting the actual LOA of the boat. Luckily the new antennea we are using for Starlink only weighs a few KG and has a much smaller footprint. We've had it attached to our solar panels on Delos for about 8 months now and absolutely no issues, even in heavy seas and wind so I think we should be okay. The roof is engineered to be as strong as your standard davit in order to lift something that weighs as much as Maggie, so it should hold a few hundred kilos without breaking a sweat!

Sailing SV Delos

Ha ha yes, I think all the layers got turned on all at once!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Jeanette!

Sailing SV Delos

Looks great! What’s the idea on timeline from the start of the build to actual sea trials/tests?

Michael Nathaniel

Open Water looks cool! Like "danceable surfaces even in stilettos", although not sure how you'd look in heels, Brian. Agree on electric tenders - energy density still an issue with batteries.

Mark Li

Love it!!! So do all the sheets for overlapping heads sails, reacher, code 0, etc. get routed back to the forward cockpit? Or will these go to sheet winches in the aft cockpit? Sailing wise, my only concern is limited visibility to the shape/trim on the main. Otherwise I love the separate "sailing cockpit" forward! What about steering? Will it be hydraulic? I assume there is just the one inside helm station? What about emergency tillers/steering? Folding props? Or feathering? I really like my MaxProp! 😉

Bob Caverly

I love the water catchment idea more and more. Will it go straight to potable or to the water maker input? Way to use what maker gives. Reminds me totally of Waterworld (you will need a tomato plant in a pot..). Are you planning on putting up the wind turbine generators again? Or is solar going to be in abundance? And, lastly, I think you should tip your fore spar like a medieval jousting lance; tip it with a fist, or figurehead like a seahorse or dolphin? Fair winds, friends

Michael Williams

So excited to see this through design to completion. That design looks insane! All that cabin space! 😲

Mike Green

Very nice! I'm looking forward to more updates. Chris and his son did a great job.

James Good

I think you need magnetohydrodynamic drive. Get that puppy up to 60 or 70 knots. So you can dodge those squalls.

Denis Patrick

Don't forget about your Starlink mounting location and cable runs!

Chris Hughes

Very snazzy design. One question - what do you call a dolphin striker that points up? (My guess - a seagull striker…)

Matt Allswede

Holey Moley, she's beautiful!

CATHERINE HACKETT

Are you going with a cutter rig this time? JerryU

JerryUlmer

I am confused about the invisible rudders? You still have rudders ..... right? You mentioned thrust? The 900' boat that just knocked down the Key Bridge in Baltimore ....... which you have sailed past several times, lost Power while turning into the channel under the bridge ..... it kept turning ........ and crashed into the main support ........ I think due to steering. The Bridge is gone ...... and the Case will be in Court for years, as the Owner says they are only insured for 43 million. That will not pay for the cleanup ....... let along ships trapped........ and a new bridge. The New boat looks beautiful!

Bonne Mike

going to add a garage for Maggie that's above the water so no extra drag at the back of the cat.. Could also function as a workshop

Norm

Amazing!

Kyall

Is there a winch to hoist Maggie onto the platform?

Coree

The solar sounds amazing! We have 4KW of panels on our off grid house and use the generator about once a year or less. We don't worry about power so that sounds like more than enough for your household! Keep turning dreams into reality! Aloha

Marshall&Carol Orr

I can practically see the whole family in the cock pit, it is looking amazing!

Ashley Congemi

Dang that looks freakin awesome!! Can’t wait to see some production work in the future!

Rick

That's so awesome! Love when members of the tribe steps up to help the Delos crew!

Jerry and Kelly Polack

Those graphics look marvelous! 50 years ago all you'd get is a front, back, with port and starboard side views! Oh, and one from the top and bottom.

Scott C. Wise

Looks very Delos style, absolutely amazing! If I were to design a boat I'd love to just copy paste everything you're doing 😍 some other YouTube couple have kids, trimaran, exposed cockpit and no washing machine... Oh lord! But we all have different styles. I like your style!

David Kågell

Slowly but shurely…Buddha Man sails? love the technical aspect of it all 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🌏🌏🌏

Jeanne H. Mathieu

By far, the best-looking Cat I have ever seen. I want one.

David Gray

The props are at an interesting angle. Does this serve some special thrust vector function? it looks like it will translate to holding the bow down when under power.

Spencer Norby

You had me for 10 seconds on the rudders! Beautiful design and great improvements.

Gravytrain

Great Job on the renders. Want to look at it in VR!

Juan David

Very cool !!!! A couple of thoughts: 1) Is that the max you can extend the roof?2) Since the free version of Rhino works as a viewer, any plans to make the .3dm files available to play with? 3) Where does the great big internet provider antenna go? If on that extended roof, is it strong enough?

Bob Camp

Woa, pretty friggin awesome!!!

Nate See

Also interesting use of two jibs at one time .... welcome to modeling :) :) :)

Bob Camp

Sure is a sexy looking home 👍

Gary Nathan Collier

Beauty! Way to go, team Delos!

Chris and Claudia Stothard

Ha ha we've exchanged these for a new invisible thrust vectoring technology! J/K in progress :). But good eye!

Sailing SV Delos

Looks amazing! Great work Chris & son!

Elvar Ásmundsson

Hey Mark, check out openwaterssolar.com . They are a new but very interesting company! All our friends have their BBQ on the aft bulwark, nearly the same position and from what we've seen it seems to work pretty well. Regarding the electric tender- I've spoken to a few different companies..... When I tell them we need to be able to plane with 4 adults + scuba gear and have a range of 10nm minimum they say it's a pretty tall order! Most electric tenders I've seen are very small and light weight. I'm sure the tech will improve but from what I've seen we'd need a smaller, lighter dinghy and have to limit our range closer to the boat.

Sailing SV Delos

Great to see that rendition. I'm glad to see the hatches over the cockpit and salon You will want the ability to look up st the main while lounging in the back. I don't have a view from my salon and it's a little disappointing.

Tim S

Wow, amazing. But where are the rudders?

Robin Evers

So excited, please do more of these guys

Alan Gore

can you share the solar company you might use? Non-slip coating? Also, any concerns about smoke and heat (and hopefully never a big fire) from the BBQ under the coachroof? With a forward helm, you'll have great ventilation to blow smoke from the salon through but could get smoky if the wind isn't there and might discolor or damage the coach roof. Just a thought. Love the dive tanks in the transom. Thoughts on electric tenders?

Mark Li

She looks amazing!!!

M. Scott Owitz

Looking great guys - how exciting for you
