Mobile-Companion for D&D 5e 0.20.12 and final words of 2025

Hello, dear Patrons!

Mobile-Companion

Today's update is a quick one. Mobile-Companion for D&D received some bugfixes and is moving from Early Access to public release. The most important change in this version is the Trade-App, which is a Patreon-exclusive feature. I showcased most of this version in my previous post, but the newer version includes the following changes and bugfixes:

Last words of 2025

This is the last post of the year, so I want to take a moment for a brief recap.

I started working on Foundry modules in December 2023. I wanted to help my players alleviate the micromanagement in our in-person sessions (like inventory and spell management). It was initially a personal project, built with only rudimentary JavaScript knowledge (what an awful language, to be honest) and no clue how to implement Foundry modules. It was frustrating — Foundry documentation was sparse at best, or nonexistent at worst. I didn’t publish anything at first, but I kept seeing Reddit posts from people asking if mobile sheets existed. They were in the same situation I was when I began using Foundry for my in-person sessions. So I cleaned up my code, released it, and the response was very positive. After a while, though, I realized a purely sheet-based approach didn’t satisfy me — it was more of a hack than a real solution. I had some bigger ideas about an app that would work better on tablets and even smartphones.

I started exploring better frameworks. Since I’m primarily a backend Java developer, I had only a bit of experience with frontend frameworks like React and Svelte. Luckily, I discovered TyphonJS (Thank you Michael for your incredible work!), and working with that framework enabled me to build the first Mobile-Companion, which debuted in May 2024. It worked well, and as I added more features, more people migrated from Sheet-Only to Mobile-Companion.

Mobile-Companion has become a true passion project. Alongside my full-time job, I work on it every other weekday, nearly every weekend, and through most of my vacation time. I genuinely love it, and if I had one wish, it would be to work full time on my Foundry modules.

Since Sheet-Only and Mobile-Companion, many smaller modules have come to life. I began collaborating with the talented Kris to port his Compendium of Trade Goods to Level Up: Advanced 5th Edition, and when I started playing Mongoose Traveller 2e, I kicked off the Traveller Toolkit.

During development, people began asking how they could support me, so I started this Patreon in March 2024. As a thank you to my early supporters, I added extra functionality to Sheet-Only and released Sheet-Only-Plus for my Patrons. I was anxious about putting my work (and myself) out in public like this and even charging money, not knowing what reaction I’d get. Would I face backlash, because something wasn’t working or updates took too long? Would people make demands I didn’t want to fulfill? Was I obligated to everyone who supported my work financially? These concerns weighed on my mind.

My worries were unfounded. This community has been nothing but kind and generous. I’ve received so much positive feedback since starting my Patreon and Discord server. Many people propose features I never would have thought of. Even if I say no to an idea, there’s no hard feelings. Users report bugs in a helpful and patient manner, not in an accusatory way.

Thank you all for that. I wish you the very best and hope to see our community continue to grow in the coming year.

Cheers!
Syrious
