It started its life inspired by Silver W King's DBZ SI, and then I saw the first season of "Eminence in Shadow," and was like, "Okay, let's take the concept of a character who is manipulating things from the background for a greater good and play it straight."

In fact, at least that, since the Dragon Balls are used at least twice: once during the Pilaf saga and once when King Piccolo comes back. DB covers a time period of at least two years, counting however many months there were in searching for the Dragon Balls and preparing for each of the tournaments.
