The most “successful” pirate to ever live. Showered with accolades and acclaim, his name itself has become synonymous with the word “pirate,” and his fame even matches or exceeds that of the infamous Edward Teach. A certain brand of rum has even taken his name as their own, increasing the popularity and reach of his legend.

Although his origins are mysterious, his military history is well-documented. He began serving under another captain as a privateer, and eventually, he was awarded a commission of his own and a letter of marque, granting him permission to attack enemy ships at sea.

Under the authority of the English crown, he undertook many assaults against the Spanish and their settlements in the Caribbean, earning great fortunes and outwitting many enemy commanders. Again and again, his use of shrewd tactics and cunning strategy won him victories that would not have been possible in conventional warfare, and with each victory, both his wealth and his fame grew.

When politics brought him before the court in London, he was greeted not with scorn, but with cheers. “Henry Morgan” was the hero of Britain, the defender of the realm.

At several points, he was even the acting governor in Jamaica, and he was responsible for fortifying and strengthening Port Royal against attack by the Spanish and the French. Even up until the end of his life, he was involved in the governing of the territory, such was his prominence among the people there.

Incidentally, Captain Morgan will continually insist that everything he did was within the bounds of the law. The fastest way to arouse his ire is to call him a pirate, even though that is, ironically, the way history remembers him best.
