[Hereafter] Chapter LXIX: Return to Normalcy (Refrain)

The team comes home, and Da Vinci is waiting for them.

I want to call this a "quick cooldown chapter," but it's almost 6K words long, so that wouldn't be right, and they don't do loads of cooling down either. I don't even know how this got to be as long as it is, to be honest. I was at about 2.5k and going to myself, "I'll be lucky to reach 4k," but I blew past that.

In any case, this also sets us up for a few things coming in a couple chapters. Like a certain someone's return. Who's excited for that?

EDIT: Moving down.

Comments

The thing about replacement bodies in Nasuverse is that they really...aren't different. At least at the high end. Puppet masters like Touko and someone as skilled as Da Vinci can make puppets so realistic that they're essentially indistinguishable from the real thing, to the point where Touko's soul is automatically yanked into the next puppet when her current one dies because the World itself can't even tell which is the original. So while Olga is probably going to have a few mental scars over this whole situation, any disconnect she has with her replacement body will be entirely psychosomatic. I'm still working out exactly how that is going to present itself in-story, though, because it'll be a little more difficult to give it the attention it deserves when Hereafter isn't her POV.

Question: With the upcoming return of Olga Marie, how are you thinking of characterizing her in response to literally being brought back as a soul in a different body? I imagine body dysmorphia could be a big thing for her, and if that is the case Taylor could probably help her out with that, as she probably went through something similar upon gaining a new arm

Pandora

I don't recognize that scene, so I couldn't say. Do you have a more specific source for that?

Caractacus

Normal in terms of strength but skill would be the big thing. Then again, we saw our Altria ( Mwahaha ) outclassed by Sasaki Kojiro...so is it her strength that is her main draw or is it that she is more known to the western canon?

Gifted-Monster

You say she's an OC but I saw some parts of a Fate TV special that had Scathach fighting a blonde woman. Was that Aife?

Gifted-Monster

Some of them probably will, just as a method of passing the time. Even then, however, it's not going to be as big a deal among the Servants as all of that, for a couple of reasons: firstly, because it wouldn't be the only time Servants have kept their mouths shut about something to avoid undue influence on the Masters (Gilgamesh himself, in his part 1 interlude, says that all of the Servants with high enough Clairvoyance already know exactly what awaits at the end of the Singularities, but are keeping silent about it so the journey isn't ruined), and secondly, because the dream cycle is inconsistent at best in the first place. Frankly, it was a shortcut for Nasu when he realized he didn't have the space for a more organic way of telling Artoria's backstory in a Grail War setting. Even if we ignore that, "memories of the king" didn't start occurring until at least a week into Fate route, when Shirou was finally getting cozy with Saber. There are undoubtedly going to be more moments where they're relevant, but the reason I bothered in the first place is to give some flesh to Aife so that she could feel more three-dimensional. The whole reason I haven't done it with more Servants is because they're mostly established characters, so they already have interludes and backstories in canon. With Aife, as an OC, I had to do more work instead of relying on the readers to - for the most part - already know what they were dealing with.

Caractacus

Column A, Column B. That's one of those things that seems fairly inconsistent throughout Fate. Lore-wise, yes, humans are supposed to be stronger in the ancient past, but we're not given great feats for that from characters from those time frames that weren't already Servants. Even for LB5, where you could argue we get the closest look, it's hard to figure where the Klironomia end and that innate strength begins. On the other hand, it's pretty explicitly stated that Artoria's incredible strength comes directly from her liberal use of Mana Burst. Without it, she's "just a normal girl." If I recall correctly, that was in either FSN or Hollow Ataraxia, and it's direct commentary from Shirou.

Caractacus

Question: In an earlier chapter Nero was shown to charge at Caligula and force him to block. Was her strength a byproduct of her sword, or due to it being the early days of man and so close to the age of the gods?

Gifted-Monster

I may have asked this before but are the servants ever going to sleep so they can have the dream cycle of the masters? Taylor’s story seems to be gaining some interest and from what I know killing an alien god puts her up there with the kaleidoscope vampire guy. And is a Big Deal from what little I know of Fates universe beyond unlimited bladeworks route. I’m also going to ignore the difference between fates and worms alien gods cause that sounds like a debate I don’t know enough to argue.

Prepare for sudden U-Olga

Pedro F

Super excited for Marie! Thank you for the chapter.

It's nice to see Taylor opening up to and getting along better with her team; she's even getting compliments. I'm definitely curious to see if they'll really be able to restore Marie in a week or if something else will go wrong.
