Depravation 8.3
Added 2019-11-23 10:52:52 +0000 UTCA little longer than I would have liked to get this done and a little shorter for all the time it wound up taking, but here it is.
The continuation of the murder mystery!
Yeah, I won't be surprised if everyone already knows who did it, but I threw a few red herrings in to try and throw you guys off the scent.

Oh? You know they're there, but do you know which is which? I said there were red herrings; I never said they would be easy to distinguish. :) Holmes exists on the Throne. He's a Ruler Servant in FGO, and he plays coy with whether or not he ever existed. "Am I a detective featured in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional accounts? Or am I a real detective whose adventures were chronicled by that very author?" On cleverness, there really isn't a better way to answer than to admit you're right. When a character who has all the answers also uses those answers to full effect, what you get is a boring story. That's why the Sherlock Holmes novels were written from Watson's point of view: if they were written from Sherlock's, then the audience would have known the ending by the third chapter. Maybe I overcorrect, though. In trying not to have Taylor have the right answer every time immediately, maybe I'm dumbing her down a little too much. On the other hand, teenager, so...

Maybe, if she's strong and motivated AND smart, there's no story anymore -- it's done and solved, all problems fixed -- but it's so, so frustrating, especially coming from canon Taylor. Also, James, you shouldn't have mentioned red herrings. Now that we see the diversions for what they are, they've lost all effect. Might want to avoid saying the same on SV. Finally, CAN she install Holmes? Isn't he totally fictional? Of course, I'm sure there are plenty of other heroes who're good detectives on the side.

"Not wanting to lean on the mental powers of heroes" isn't about avoiding an easy answer or anything, and it wasn't meant as an excuse for why she didn't consider it.

2019-11-23 13:52:32 +0000 UTCOk, this is a plot hole or Taylor being an idiot with her powers. She stated that she wants to catch those responsible due to the Excalibur symbol. Armsmaster basically stated that they want Thinker support. Her power in the past pushes heroes that are useful for a task to the front. Why the hell she didn't use Sherlock Holmes for investigating the crime scene? The argument that she didn't want to lean on the mental powers of heroes is really weak and makes Taylor look like an idiot here that only will lead to more angst in the future when she realizes that she should have thought about it. That both Vista (who is the most experienced Ward) and Armsmaster missed the possibility knowing that she can use legendary figures is just stranger. Unfortunately this feels like one of those scenes where the heroes conveniently forget a piece of knowledge or power they used in the past to make a mystery more interesting. Part of my disappointment is also due to the missed "Elementary my dear Vista/Armsmaster" moments.
