Present and Accounted For

So, entirely without meaning to, it seems I wound up taking February off from Essence and proceeded to do work on other projects. A little bit on Recursive Wisdom, but more (by quite a lot) on Project Nietzsche (QotA, although I'm not sure I've told you guys what that stands for, yet).

I wanted to give you guys a few presents to make up for it, in the form of Chapters-in-Progress links to the opening chapters of QotA, but I talked to my editor, and he said, "Oh, no way, it's way too early to start showing that off." And he's right, because there's still loads of worldbuilding that needs to be done and lots of setting stuff and character details that need to be ironed out, before I seriously start working on QotA and it's solid enough to start revealing.

However, I do want to give you guys something to make up for it. So, I decided to give you some early concept art for a character who will likely play at least some role in QotA: Okita Setsuka. I haven't quite figured out what to do with her feet and lower legs, yet, but here she is.

A talented young woman learning swordsmanship from Aife. As a result of her intense admiration, her hair has become a dark auburn. Although it appears black at first inspection, at the ends, where it's thinner, and when the light hits it just right, the true red color becomes visible.

This is literally all I can safely give you about her, right now. I know it's not much, I know it doesn't compare to, you know, actual chapters and more substantial content, but this is it.

I'll also give you early concept art of the main characters soon, too. For now, though, it's just Setsuka, who is one of the characters I just have a blast writing. She's so much fun - I think the levity she (unintentionally) brings will be essential in breaking up the gloom of the setting.

I'll probably wind up doing a more realistically proportioned portrait of her later. For now, anime style, with exaggerated eyes and simplified face and nose shapes.
