Gaming Historica | Daewoo Zemmix | Korea's MSX Console

Daewoo in South Korean means "Great Universe". This company was create in 1957 and became one of Korea's most successful technology companies. They made electronics and cars and buses. Also large building machine like tractors and even had hotel businesses!

In 1999 Daewoo lost all their money and was bankrupt and closed. But did you know in the 1980's Daewoo also created a video game console?

In South Korea  video gaming  had some restriction law in the 80's and it was not so easy to play Famicom. Most of the console is imported and some Sega console like the Samsung Mega Drive were licensed to Korea and they did have some company that made games also for arcade and console too.

But PC was always very strong and popular. The MSX was a Japanese PC that was very popular in Asia and we know many of its famous games like Metal Gear Solid and Parodius..

The Daewoo company made a game console that could play MSX games.. really it is the same as the MSX PC but without the PC function. Instead it is really only for playing the MSX games! Quite cool idea!!

The first console Daewoo release is called the Zemmix and they make so many different style and colors it really is amazing!

The first Zemmix console could play MSX games was the CPC-50 and CPC-51. Later there was the Zemmix Super V for MSX2 and then the CPC-61 and CPG-120 for MSX2 and MSX2+ called Zemmix Turbo.. . after all is finished there are Zemmix consoles that can play all MSX games. And these are rare things!!

There were also Korean companies that made games just for the Zemmix console.

I have include some pictures of many different Zemmix types here!

Now you know! 🤗

Ooh for sure. I have a friend who is Korean & lived in Korea for a bit. There was a big thing with arcade & computer gaming. I think they had PC hangout places before we did in the west.

I first heard of Daewoo in 1999 when a co worker of mine got one of their cars, the Lanos. They were teasing him so much but I believe he got a great deal because they were trying to market here in the US. I never knew they made anything else but cars.

The design of this machines was very interesting!! So much consoles tried to have success and failed!

Now I do know! I had no idea something like this even existed. It looks kinda cool, and I can see that it took inspiration from other popular types of consoles. One of them does kind of look like a Famicom. It’s really interesting to learn about these different game consoles & technology. I’ve heard the Korea can be pretty strict on some of there stuff. I do have a PC & have games for it but for me I have always enjoyed console more. I grew up with people who played WOW & RuneScape but I never had the money to play it so I ended up missing out.
