Oh, also I said on an earlier comment that I was wondering how much love Tokiomi has for his family, but I think his conversation with Kariya here really shows he doesn't even understand what love is, or means. He only cares about his own goal of being the most perfect mage, and reaching the Truth (which are both sides of the same coin for him), and he seems to believe that this is the morally superior approach to life, nothing else compares. In his mind, his wife is nothing more than a womb meant to give him the most perfect magic heir, and his daughters are nothing more than tools to reach that selfsame goal of his. He does not even see the cruelty of pitting both sisters against each other because he does not see them as people, but as extensions of his own will. It's fucked up levels of egocentrism, and yet if you asked him, he'd probably argue that he is selfless because he has devoted his entire life to this goal that he seems to believe is the most important thing in the world. Fucking hate this guy lol but I love this characterisation, it's so convincing and intricate.

2025-09-02 18:04:03 +0000 UTCThe second opening was written by Yuki Kajiura, the same composer who did the soundtrack for the anime! If you enjoyed those, then definitely go check out more of her music, she's done so many good pieces!!! I really love her stuff. I really liked your comment about different people finding different ways through life but arriving at similar conclusions. It's really made me think about how ever servant and master duo are reflections of each others, some complementary, and others destructive. Rider and Waver both being "fools" who can't help but yearn for something way bigger than themselves despite knowing how small they are and how impossible their goal is ; Caster and Ryuunosuke both finding he same childlike joy in absolutely horrendous acts ; Lancer and Kayneth both being so devoted to someone that they become blind to their faults (Lancer towards his master, and Kayneth towards his wife)(and then Sola-Ui herself being a twisted distortion of that by being so devoted to Lancer solely because she's under a spell) ; Archer and Tokkiomi both seeing themselves as superior beings and looking down upon others. And then, well, the rest of them are spoilers for now ;) But there's also this interesting parallel between Kiritsugu and Maiya's relationship VS Irisviel and Saber's, in terms of devotion and compatibility. And, finally, Tokiomi and Kariya mirroring each other, one upholding what he believes to be the ideals all mages should strive for, the other rejecting everything mages stand for ; where mages VS humans almost looks like some logic VS emotion conflict. It's truly incredible how many parallels and foils you can see in this story. Every time I rewatch it, I find more stuff to think about!

2025-09-02 17:55:44 +0000 UTCWhile I'm far more a fan of Oath Sign (the first OP) than you, I definitely like the second more. Just something about the harmonies and the strings always forces me to listen to the whole thing through.
