Ahhh, the infamous banquet of kings! One of the most contentious scenes in the fate fandom. Lot of debate on the ideals and methods of kingship. Gen Urobuchi, the author of Fate Zero (Author of Fate/Stay Night is Kinoko Nasu, and he collaborated heavily for Fate/Zero, but you can see the pen of a different author) really loves to rag on poor Artoria haha. And just kind of has her take it. There’s a running joke that Fate/Stay Night Artoria would have thrown hands by that point. But I personally love the kings throwing around their ideas of kingship. Especially because Artoria’s way is more appealing to modern people while Iskandar’s way is much closer to the kings and heroes of antiquity, like in the Greek myths and such. One could also argue it’s a more Christian view, complete with martyrdom, vs a more “heathen” (polytheistic, especially to the gods of the Mediterranean) view of kingship and leadership. Despite coming from Welsh mythos, most of the tales of King Arthur and the Round Table are drenched in Christianity after all. Also Ionioi Hetairoi (“The Ionian Companions”), well Hetairoi at least refers to a kings retinue, even on the battlefield. So yeah it’s his Noble Phantasm. It’s a reality marble, so it allows him to overlay an inner world on the real world. It’s like a Domain Expansion in JJK, and likely one of the sources of inspiration for that power, though the famous Reality Marble comes in Fate/Stay Night. Funny enough, episode 10 is filler. It’s anime only filler. I find it delightful though, and it absolutely fits Rin. You said you just finished the Rin arc in Fate/Stay Night. Do you mean the Unlimited Bladeworks Route? If so, that means you have already played the Fate route so you likely understand what I’m talking about regarding F/SN Artoria and F/Z Artoria. What did you think of both routes so far?

2025-08-28 01:45:19 +0000 UTCShowing Rin in episode 10 is a really good way to expand upon her character for fans of the series, of course, but it also shows something about Tokiomi, namely that even though he's objectively a horrible person (he did, after all, give up one of his daughters to a monster and isn't shown to have even a second thought about all this)(even though i'm not sure how much he knew about what awaited her there), he is a really good teacher. Doesn't scold Rin for her mistakes, gives her something as an outlet for he thirst for growth and curiosity, to gently redirect her towards things that are closer to her level... and you can see that reflected into Rin's character, how willing to help and patient she is in return with her own classmates! It's a great way to show his motivations. He's not a father out of love (since he's reaady to give up a child like it's nothing), he's doing this out of responsibility as a mage, to make sure he has a proper heir. And being a good teacher is an essential part of it! Ultimately, it's hard to tell how much love Tokiomi has for his family, he's always acting proper, it's his whol schtick, right? "Always be elegant" or whatever it was. It's just such a good character exploration. They do this with pretty much every Master in this show, they show the good and the bad parts of them, this is a big reason why, even though Kiritsugu is technically the main character here, all of them feel almost equally important in the story! It's so good.

2025-08-26 16:19:28 +0000 UTCNot sure if its already been explained to you but Berserkers master Kariya was a close friend of Aoi who fell in love with her but due to wanting her far from his creepy mage family left the magic world to be a normal person, so she married Tokiyomi. Now he hangs out with her and the kids as “friends” though it’s clear Kariya still loves her while Aoi has moved on. This is all I’ll say since his motivations and reasons for being in the grail war are expanded in season 2 but this backstory isn’t really expanded on in the show.
