I think it’s the same piece that keeps playing to Irisviel on the beach, so I always took it overall as a melancholy piece about the situation. If it does represent true love like you suggested, it raises some questions, because I definitely don’t think Kiritsugu loves Maiya romantically. That said maybe it refers to something you might learn later which I don’t want to spoil.

2025-07-30 22:56:58 +0000 UTCAh, the infamous infidelity scene. Yeah, personally I rag on Kiritsugu a LOT for it, even though I like him as a character. To my understanding from the novel, it’s being done with his wife’s (Irisviel’s) knowledge, as a means of “preparing himself to let her go” by emotionally distancing from her by betraying her. Jury’s out on how much of a betrayal it is if wife knows about it but idk. I think it’s flawed and stupid and terrible to do but that’s the point I suppose. Kiritsugu is a deeply damaged person who basically always picks a bad way to cope with things lol. As for the “puppet” thing. She’s a homunculus, an artificial human. The purpose she in particular was created for was for this war. You’ll find out the details later but she was literally created to die in this war. Kiritsugu taught her a whole bunch of stuff, they fell for each other, and the child they had was out of love and to leave something behind for Kiritsugu when she inevitably died. That’s why she spent her whole life in the castle, she was created there and didn’t leave until the war. They also note that Illya hasn’t grown very much despite being eight, which is important for Fate/Stay Night, but not so much here.
