Yeah Raven is complicated but if you ever do a rewatch pay attention to her dialogue closely and everyone she interacts with. If will definitely give you a new perspective of her by after you've finished up to Volume 9. One thing about the series RWBY is that Monty had always pointed out they plant the seeds early and it doesn't come into fruition until much later. Plus he ways pointed out that NOT ALL is what it seems. CRWBY (Miles and Kerry - the writers and showrunner) does a great job at subverting popular tropes.

She's putting Ruby's needs before her own which is why she needs to speed up the process of getting to her. And that means having to go to the one person who caused her abandonment issues. You have to keep in mind that the continent of Anima is huge and trying to find Ruby will be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Yang needed the absolute fastest way possible otherwise it might take weeks or even months to find Ruby.
