This episode to me really illustrates how important Gabrielle is as a balance for Xena. I've always regarded her as the "human equation" of the duo and here without her a proper sense of understanding of the Horde wouldn't even have happened. And it's only really understanding that is going to stop war and conflict in the end. Xena did almost overbalance back into her darkness here and Gabrielle and her attitudes were a big part of pulling her back.

XD I WAS a little surprised that you didn't seem to register it when Xena said "You don't know how much I love... that." Which is Xena stopping herself from saying "I love you" to Gabrielle. This episode does a great job of making the audience feel the seriousness of the situation they're in.
