2021-06-22 14:06:24 +0000 UTCRemember in the episode where they introduce Kaji and Asuka, the 8th episode on the sea with the naval fleet. As the Angel is attacking and destroying all the battleships, Kaji escapes. At the end of the episode, they say that Kaji just delivered something encased in bakelite, still alive, to Gendo (Shinji's dad). It was an embryo looking thing, and Gendo called it Adam, the key to the Human Instrumentality Project. These past episodes they mention how the Adam project is going along pretty well.
