Julia cutting her own arm served as a way to jog her memory of Brakebills. The spell the teacher cast was meant to remove her memory of the place, but he could only remove what he knew had happened: Julia arriving, taking the test, and failing. Since he didn't know she cut herself, he failed to wipe that memory from her mind.
