Tree sap can be used to waterproof objects, as glue, or as bandages. You can eat tree sap, but it's usually bitter and some trees are poisonous. Remember that Alpha did the same whipping thing we Beta in the season nine finale. In her mind, pain makes you stronger. The Whisperer change, "We are the end of the world," serves as a reminder that with the Apocalypse, humans must act more like the walkers to survive. After all, look how much Alpha is able to use walkers to help her plans compared to the people of Hilltop who seem them only as enemies.
