I'm glad they mentioned that, as a medical examiner, Evan shouldn't know how to do any kind of emergency surgery, especially with improvised tools. Unless you're under arrest, hospitals can't keep you for any reason, so Catherine could leave any time she felt like it, with our without doctor's consent. That being said, I can pretty much guarantee Catherine lied about the doctor authorizing her release.
