The vampire movie you're thinking of is "Nosferatu" from 1922. Echolocation is the name of how the crawlers move and hunt. I think you know how it works. Since the crawlers are blind, shining bright lights in their faces wouldn't do shit to them, and would honestly hinder you more than them. While the group was British, the cave they're exploring was in the Appalachian mountains in North Carolina. Loved the reaction though. Haven't laughed that hard in awhile.
