I think it was great how it ended for Widmore. He believed Desmond would never be a great man, his words in their first meeting. Widmore realized he himself served a purpose for Jacob's plan by bringing Desmond, the very real and literal failsafe of the heart of the Island. That was the second time Widmore was responsible for Desmond's arrival, the first time after Widmore humilated Desmond leading him to the around-the-world race. AND Ben kills him risking the ire of the monster to get revenge for Alex's death, trying not to give Widmore a chance to save Penny.
It's not that they didn't know how to end it or that it was quick. Widmore was past done, my opinion, it was always about the characters sorrounding him.

I felt the same way about the Widmore story. I dont think they knew how to end it, so they just shot him :) Im ok with how the rest of the stories ended , tho.
