The mother pretty much long-conned Jacob and his brother since children to become protectors of the Island, and for one of them to kill her and relieve her of her responsibilities, like Jacob did with Ben. Life, death, rebirth- whatever that light is, a source of consciousness or soul or goodness, my theory is when Jacob threw his brother in the waterfall, the brother lost it to the light and since the RULE was Jacob couldn't kill him, his newly dark essence remained alive as the monster. Or maybe it all happened because it was what Jacob wished, how he saw his brother.
