He did it because he knew his death would be inevitable, and because Desmond told him that he saw Claire & Aaron safe. But that would only happen if Charlie died. So there's that.

LOL And Charlie shut the door so that the Others didn't jam the signals again. Trust the show, just go with it. AND actually, during the middle of the third season, the creators of the show made the deal with ABC to finish the show after the sixth season, so we did know back then that we had 3 more to go. We had to wait find out if Charlie died or not like 8 or 9 months between the last seasons. :(
