I haven't watched ep6 yet, but I will be tomorrow
I think it was showing his love for Ilya becoming so strong that it cant be ignored more than him being incompetent

While I understand the plot required Shane to be physically compromised🤕, so the Admirals could win the Cup🏆 However, in my opinion, making him 'distracted' on the ice feels wrong. Shane is a neurodivergent athlete who thrives on routine, focus, and control, he wouldn't just 'lapse' in focus during a game😠. An "illegal hit" or physical injury would have honored his skill and dedication much better than making him look sloppy or incompetent.🙄

An interesting fact about Svetlana is that she actually has dual citizenship (Russia and America).
Ilya's Brother & Corruption
In Russia, the badge isn’t for protection—it’s a license to hunt. His brother didn't see a police force; he saw a franchise for systemic bribery and extortion. When the pay is a joke and the quotas are a noose, you don’t find heroes. You find guys like him, getting high on the drugs they’re supposed to bust and bleeding people dry because they know no one is coming to stop them. Ilya was basically just another mark with a deeper pocket than the ones he could shake down on the street.
Ilya's Relationship with Russia
When Ilya tells Shane that he can’t go home, he's not actually implying that he has a choice of whether or not to go home - he doesn't. He's saying that he cannot go home safely.
His identity as a "state asset" means his life is literally the property of the Russian government, and any perceived betrayal—like being queer—would be met with state-sanctioned violence.
His Russian passport makes him literally "bound to Russia" and they can revoke his ability to travel at any moment. Without a valid passport or a foreign work visa, his MLH career would end instantly, and he would be forcibly repatriated to face the consequences - under current Russian law, the “international LGBT movement” is classified as an extremist organization. For a high-profile Olympian like Ilya, being outed isn't just a scandal; it’s a criminal act of "extremism" that carries a prison sentence of up to 10–12 years.
Because he is a famous athlete who quite literally represented Russia, the state views his public image as a tool for "traditional values". If his queerness were revealed, the Ministry of Justice would likely treat him as a traitor to the state, leaving him with no legal defense or protection.

Ilya has called Shane by his first name... once before. I think you missed it in the last episode - right after the very intense sex scene on the couch - prior to Shane leaving. In fact, Ilya calling Shane by his first name for the first time is what caused Shane's Episode 4 freakout. It wasn't about Ilya's bisexuality, his jealousy of, or concen with other women. He’s always known that Ilya was bisexual and they both were having sex with other people throughout their situationship (the books depicts Shane having sexual experiences with men and women during this time period). What actually triggered Shane was Ilya's unexpected intimacy. He felt safe maintaining a strictly physical, long-distance, or hidden, situationship, but as soon as it became too real - Ilya asking Shane to stay, opening up about his sexual past and specifically using Shane's first name after such an emotionally charged sexual experience - it shattered Shane's carefully built wall of detachment and he ran.

This is one of the best book adaptations I've ever seen. It's pretty faithful to the book, with just a few shifting of scenes and expanding of characters in the show, that we don't get in the book, but nothing big is left out. that being said, the time period of Scott and Kip's relationship has shifted the most, with them getting together earlier in the show than in the book, and not having years before the coming out after winning the cup. When I first watched the show, and being an avid reader, I guessed that they probably had been together since the end of ep. 3, but just maybe adjusting to fit each other's lives, and when I read the book and it didn't have the time jump, I kept the same opinion. Kip and Elana and his dad are sitting in the same area they did when Scott first got him the tickets and if they had been broken up for 3 years, I don't think they would have all gone to the game at all. It's just in this version of events, they were in the closet for years, rather than a few months.
Obviousy this is a beloved episode because this is when they began really opening up to each other and of course Ilya confesses his love... in Russian. Also, I love how everything worked out with Rose, and I love how sly Ilya is trying to be in finding out if she came with him and where they stand. I keep seeing people say that Ilya is a jerk and toxic and a lot of crap, but this man would face literal death if people in Russia found out about Shane or any guy, so of course he keeps things surface level with Shane the first few years, they were ony 17 when they met and though he is brash and confident, he is also scared. Shane also isn't ready for more, until he is.
Also, I listened to the What Chaos! hockey podcast reviews of this show, and they clued me in that Shane made a very bad mistake looking back at Ilya from where he was on the ice, and if it were a real team and a player lost focus like that on neutral ice with the control of the puck the Head Coach would trade them soon because they were a liability. Luckily the TV version was more forgiving.
And Now, we are on our way To The Cottage!

I appreciate you waiting to feel better before you watch the show. I think this series truly deserves it. I laughed at you having Common Goal for the intro. You're not wrong, Eric and Kyle should really stop messing around and just do it already! Also love your obsession with Vincent Lemaire's career. Truly, I wonder what ever happened to that guy.
This episode is fantastic and filled with great moments. I did laugh at the beginning when you were like "I don't think we're going to see Scott and Kip again". You had no clue lol.
