Heated Rivalry Ep1 ROOKIES PATREON VERSION

Comments

It is actually very difficult to get shows focused on queer love and intimacy, especially between men in a hypermasculine sport, produced today. In fact, despite it's massive popularity getting Heated Rivalry to the screen was a battle. Director, Jacob Tierney, reportedly faced significant resistance from American streaming companies during development. Some executives even insisted that the lead charactes should not share a kiss until the fifth episode. This pushback highlights a frustrating double standard in the industry- shows like Game of Thrones, True Blood, and Bridgerton are celebrated for their explicit straight sex scenes, yet queer intimacy—especially between two men—is often still treated as "shock value" that networks fear. Despite these hurdles, this show has become a global phenomenon, playing a vital role in normalizing queer love stories within the hyper-masculine world of sports. Actor Hudson Williams (who plays Shane) revealed on Andy Cohen Live that he has received private messages from closeted professional athletes across hockey, football, and basketball. These players expressed that seeing themselves represented—even while unable to come out publicly—meant everything to them. Thank you for your reaction; seeing these barriers broken down is essential for everyone to feel seen and recognized.

Ilya's issue at the press conference had to do with a language barrier. What looked like a freeze was actually just mental translation in process. Ilya is relatively new to the country, and trying to decode a long, complex question while simultaneously building a response in a second language is incredibly difficult.

I think the sex scenes are so well done in this. They’re cinematic but also a bit more realistic and consent is discussed - I still regret watching the film where Chloe sevigny gives an actual bj to the guy who wrote the film in the film… I mean she consented but the dynamics and art etc blurred there for me. I might go and read the books like I had to after the red wedding in game of thrones!

Oh my god that’s the guy from nip/tuck?! That show was INSANE

I believe both actors are 25. The characters are 18 when they hook up the first time.

Dylan Walsh, who plays Shane's dad is in a show called Nip/Tuck from the early 2000's, which I think you would also like. I haven't seen him in much recently, but I also don't watch everything. I won't say much here about the ep., I don't want to spoil anything, but one thing i will say is that the authur of the books has said that Shane is on the spectrum, though it's not specifically stated in the show or the books, but it might help if you see Shane through that lens for the rest fo the show. Also, just my opinion, but I think Shane tightly controls every aspect of his life, and giving up control to Ilya is a bit of a break, conversaly you could say that outside of Hockey, Ilya does not have much control with his family and Russia, so that, and his confidence, leads him to take control in the bedroom.

Well, this is a surprise! I just re-watched episodes 1 and 2, after reading the books. I had been waiting to do a full re-watch until I could watch along with someone I get watchalongs from, but that's only 3, and I did not expect anyone to do it yet, so I caved and watched again, and as soon as I'm done, I see this notifcation, and now I have to watch again! It's such a hard life, but I guess there's nothing else for it. lol. Anyway, thanks for reacting!
