They are definitely are the worst part. Remember the most important thing about a sitcom is about funny. We are here watching comedy for fun, not to watch some stupid ambigious high school boy and girls crush romantic shit. This show is a comedy, Dwight is the punchline and Michael is the core of this show. They are the main charcters and why this show famous. If you really into that kind of haunting relationship stuff just go watch Friends and Big bang theory

They add characters like this to fill out episodes and create a story so that the rest of the episodes are appreciated more. Its very simple film making strategy and you see it in literally every show ever
