Oakley Meta Vanguard review: Can you trust Meta?

I loved using the $500 Oakley Meta Vanguards; they are great sunglasses with a decent camera, solid mics, and loud speakers, but I couldn’t help but notice how everyone around me felt about them.

Meta's track record regarding the use of users' data is bad. Like, real bad. Not to mention, there are numerous ways that the camera on these glasses could be used maliciously. I wish Meta provided a bit more guidance on using these glasses, with a few more principles to follow, because otherwise, they are a great piece of tech.

But what do you think? Would you use these? Would you trust others with these?

Wait, do they have AR?

This is the way.

Subscriber to the Patreon since Day 1, and still watching these videos on YT to add an extra 2 cents to Becca’s income! Great video as always.

saving reason #6 for the next time I want to buy anything with a battery!

I’ll pass on these glasses. 1. I need a prescription. 2. I don’t trust Meta. 3. I already have more cameras than I probably need. 4. I already have earbuds that sound great. 5. IMO they look dorky. 6. I’m sick of charging batteries.

Thanks for naming the privacy issue with Meta clearly. Really appreciate the real talk. If there was a higher tier of membership then I would be signing up for it :)

Great balance in the vid of straight up reviewing the glasses (seem kind of neat!) and then bringing up the broader implications of their existence (pretty bad!), knew I could trust you to ask those questions and substantially address them. Hopefully other tech reviewers do the same – we do NOT want to casually shove the overton window on "everyone around you is constantly recording", aka The Stupid Panopticon
