Is it just me, or do trains appear more frequently than buses in Japanese anime? When I think back on anime, iconic train scenes from movies like "Spirited Away" and "Your Name" come to mind, but I can't immediately think of any memorable bus scenes.

Growing up, I took the bus more often than the train, but I never really questioned this observation. I realized that Japan is a country dominated by trains. Since moving to Tokyo, I've noticed that train lines go everywhere, and I rarely need to take a bus now. Given that many anime are set in Tokyo, it's only natural that trains appear more frequently. This became very clear to me after moving here. On the other hand, having lived in a rural area where buses were more common, I have this strong (perhaps biased) belief that buses can make for more interesting scenes than trains. The scenery seen from a bus window is more integrated into everyday life, and inside the bus, there are more levels and lots of handrails, creating a complex space. (Pretty cool!)

The other day, I took a bus in Tokyo for the first time. In my hometown, you board the bus from the back door and get off at the front. In contrast, Tokyo buses have three patterns: boarding from the front and getting off at the back, boarding from the back and getting off at the front, and boarding from the front, telling the driver your stop, and then getting off at the back. What is this...?! This made me realize that urban areas aren't always more convenient.

日本のアニメーション作品においては、バスよりも電車のほうが頻繁に登場している印象があるのは私だけでしょうか？少なくとも私は、今アニメ作品を思い返してみても「千と千尋の神隠し」や「君の名は」といった電車の名シーンが思い浮かびますが、バスの名シーンはすぐには思いつきません。

私は地元では電車よりもバスに乗る方が多かったので、あまり意識していなかったのですが、日本は電車大国であると言うことを思い出しました。実際東京に引っ越してきてからは、どこへ行くにも電車の路線が通っていて、日常生活においてバスに乗る必要がない日々が続いています。そして、東京を舞台とするアニメ作品が多いので、必然的に電車の登場回数が多くなってしまっているのです。そのことを上京してから強く実感しました。一方で、これまで地方でバス生活を続けていた私にとってみれば、映像として電車よりバスの方が面白い画を取れるはずだと言う確信的推論(思い込み)があるのです。なぜなら、窓に映る景色は電車より生活空間の中に入り込んでいますし、車内は電車と違って高低差があって、ありとあらゆるところから手すりと言う名の棒が複雑な空間を構成しています。(カッコいい‼︎)

先日は東京に来て初めてバスに乗りました。地元のバスは後ろ側のドアから乗って、運転席がある前のドアから降ります。それに対して東京のバスは、前から乗って後ろのドアから降りるものと、後から乗って前から降りるものと、前から乗る際に運転手に降りる駅を伝えてからから席につき、後ろのドアから降りるもの、と言う3つのパターンが存在すること知りました。なんだこれは……！

必ずしも都会が利便性に優れているとは言えないのだと思った体験の1つです。
