Hi everyone. Kimura here.
This is my Dormitory Diary entry for December.
December being the last month of the year, I’ve resolved to do some limit testing and see how many frames I can handle drawing in a single month. For in-betweens, one should reasonably be able to do 200. Recently, I’ve been breathing easier as I’ve gotten more used to digital animation, and from my testing, I’ve found that I can do 173 frames.
Digital art is more time-consuming than analog art, partly because you can get stuck on the undo button and constantly correct yourself, but I’ve heard that people who are really good at digital art can draw about 300 frames a month.
My animation inspector says “you won’t cut it as a key animator if you can’t handle at least 200 frames a month,” so I feel behind.
I’ve been doing in-betweens for half a year. I’m hungry for more growth.
This month, I did my first flashy action scene. The dimensions of characters change as they bounce around the screen. The cut allowed for a lot of individual expression, and I did about 6 frames for every two keyframes.
There’s much to learn before I can become a key animator. How to write timesheets, composite cels, etc. In order to fully bring these sorts of cuts to life, I feel that I need to get better at key animation as well. I feel that I have a lot of potential to grow, so I’m gonna hit the ground running next year! More power!!!
Last but not least, thank you very much for your support in crowdfunding the New Animator Dormitory. The comments from those who support us have encouraged me tremendously. We will do our best to live up to your expectations. We appreciate everything that you do for us!
December 2021,
Kimura.
