Hey everyone. Kaneko here.
This is my Dormitory Diary entry for November.
I’ve been working on some teaser trailers and in-betweens outside of my studio work. That's on top of my more long-term projects.
Progress towards my animation speed has felt sluggish recently. There was even a moment there where I was producing fewer frames than I was in previous months. I’ve been told I draw too carefully and spend too much time per frame, so now the question on my mind is how to up my tracing speed without sacrificing quality. Sometimes the late-stage production team comes in to check our in-between frames, and they always politely give me advice. I learn a lot from them.
The benefit of working on a lot of projects is that you get to see various people’s layouts and draw in various contexts like actions scenes and slice-of-life scenes simultaneously. If I were to name a downside, it would be the different pitfalls you have to be mindful of per project, like variations in character designs, color tracing, and small details. I have to watch and make sure that that I’m referencing the style guide of each show as I draw. There’s been times where I get in the zone and then realize my mistakes after the fact like, “I’m not supposed to make their eyes and eyebrows transparent for this show” or “there’s no fingernails in the keyframes but I need to draw them for the in-betweens.” My animation supervisor pointed that one out to me. I felt really bad...
It looks like I’ll be able to churn out 200 frames this month. I’ll try my best to keep pace for the remainder of November.
