〈June Assignment〉
I’ve recently been thinking a lot about how important it is to make your characters act naturally in their scene upon illustrating.
Supposing the drawing is technically correct, if the emotion is off, the piece will be off. Conversely, if the drawing is technically off, it might not look bad, assuming the scene feels natural.
About the top-down drawing, it’s an illustration of a stationary subject, so yes it’s naturally going to pull us in, however, it would be even better if it had a greater display of emotion!
As for the umbrella girl, subjects like this test our ability to naturally draw everyday actions, such as holding an umbrella.
Particularly, the contrast between the structure of the umbrella (an inorganic object) and the person, then also making sure the umbrella is held such that the grip doesn’t feel forced. Those may be the 3 most important points here.
