I had completely forgotten that ending, so I was as shocked as you! The director John Sayles said that he chose Black Mama White Mama as the movie at the drive-in because it is about a black girl and white girl that are hand-cuffed together against their will, and this movie is ”about people of different races being chained together whether they want it or not”. Sayles also worked for Roger Corman during the beginning of his career, and Black Mama White Mama was made under his production company - so you can also see it as a fun little shout out. Black Mama White Mama is a fun movie to watch. Probably not for everbody as it’s a 70s low budget exploitation movie, but I enjoy that kind of stuff. And it got Pam Grier in a leading role, so what is there to complain about?
