I actually read all five GoT books and the Viserys cutting himself on the throne is a sick easter egg. It was said that one of the reasons the Targaryens built that throne made of sharp iron, was to make sure the King never felt at ease while sitting on the throne. It was said that if you didn't belong to the throne, you'll be cutting yourself and never getting used to it. It was mentioned that Daenery's father(the mad king) would be cutting himself all the time in the throne, etc.
