Reaction to Synecdoche; New York

Comments

Thank you for the honest, good quality answer. I'm not gonna be arrogant and say that I understood all the complexities of the racial divide in the US from the comment, but I think I understand. It was curious you said they separate the electorate racially, there's not such a thing in Brazil. When they do polls, I never was asked about my racial identity, I think if they tried to do this, it would be considered highly controversial. Many things around racial discussion in the US are considered taboo here in Brazil and for you guys, it's not. For example: pointing out how much percent of such candidates' votes are "black" or "latino". That would be considered highly racist in Brazil, not acceptable at all, also calling someone a "white liberal" or "working class black" would be considered very inappropriate and plain racist. Racial segregation in Prisons, we don't have it here, prisoners would never accept, even if they did, the State could not recognize a racial segregation system. It's not like there is no racism in Brazil, it's a major issue. But I don't think any country in the world has the racial divide that there is in the US, because no other country was founded in the ruins of a brutal civil war around this race issue and was not really resolved after the conflict. I legit have the understanding that me as a Brazilian won't get the complexities of this stuff without experiencing it somehow.

This is an interesting question. So here unless you are white they will fit you politically into racial categories even if they don't make sense. For instance the Latino voting block is a thing even though that doesn't mean anything. A Cuban from Florida will usually not vote like a Dominican from the Northeast. But in political discussion they label that entire group that way. The same happens for Asians and blacks. White people are usually set as the standard meaning in political discussion they are usually never referred to that way. You'll hear terms like evangelical Christian or working class used in place of middle American white people. so when you hear working class liberals that is them referring to low income white liberals. The reason I make the distinction in this video this way is because historically even though democrats or liberals are a bunch of groups coming together one group in particular doesn't seem to understand suffering until it's at their door. The divide exists but the U.S. does a good job of separating groups from each other. I remember in my comments a Brazilian telling me that they visited the south and they couldn't believe how segregated that it is. So there's definitely a class divide but even amongst the classes there is a racial hierarchy. Just an example we all do drugs the same amount in the U.S. but only certain groups receive significant jail time over and over. Even when they exist in the same class. I hope this makes sense.

Even with so much cultural background coming from movies and stuff like that, I still dont quite get how in the US, people classify each other based on race, especially in political stuff like this. Do white liberals behave like this even if they are poor white people? Is the class divide in the US trivial compared to the racial divide there is? I mean, in Brazil we do have racial related problems, but never to the point of having "white liberals" that differ from regular liberals. I think our version of it it's the bourgeois leftists, that have a similar point of view of the so called white liberals, but it's a class thing.
