Yeeah its crazy to know.. this is how they dealt with simple grief not too long ago. Especially when its a woman. Men at the time were taught to be stoic and "strong" to the point of suppressing their emotions. Cos that's what a man was. Women were the emotional ones, and when they spiraled out of control cos of things they had to deal with, they were looked on as insane. Beatrice's mother simply needed someone to be emotionally available to her to help her through this time of grief. And no one was there. Its some sad sh*t.
