Exactly! I wanted to point that out too. Both Matty and Werner agreed to go along with the business and promised to keep their mouth shut, and both were murdered because they showed too much naïveté and innocence. This is a dark path mentally for Mike to go down.

That scene with Mike and the Germans almost feels like a subtle callback to the story about his son's death. The one guy telling Mike "He was worth 50 of you" is exactly how Mike feels about his son in comparison to himself. And his son also got killed for being caught up in some bad business, but now it's Mike taking the role of the person pulling the trigger. He's got to feel like he's no better than the guys who killed his son.
