On the other hand, he almost just died facing the revenant, and in the aftermath got caught up with a very nasty infection. If he hadn’t taken those early risks, he might have very well died. And the stakes are being raised for him. Malachi has an assassin, which was hired by Orykson sure, but now he has the potential to be attacked by that force arcanist too, or others of their group. This is a pretty big risk, but it’s a risk for a very good boon. Something that could impact his growth, make him stronger faster. Not to mention, he just saw Keen have to bargain with their hag in order to survive, and get a foothold in their mind. How could he really turn the potential for greater power down, with the stakes noticeably rising around him?

Totally agree

Reasonable!

While I do agree with taking the risky option this time, I think this should be the last soul related risk Malachi does for a long while.

Well, we've already invested into two full gate spells to grow our energy and become the second best beast mage behind Edgar himself. I think continuing to invest down that path with bonding the beast mark and using it to grow our full gates on top of giving us access to magic that we normally wouldn't is the play. With that said, if we're bonding it than I think its worth having the best beast mark we can. We're ready to ascend with fists full of ascension treasures and all but maybe one or two time spells ingrained. Yes there is a risk to affecting his long term growth potential - but its not all negative. A stronger bonded item will increase his max potential in a similar way to soul damage may decrease it.

Yeah, I think there's some good recovery time in now.

Our soul is pretty healthy and we don't have major magical plans after this for a while. We have to deliver some eggs and maybe visit a meteor shower soon. But the big events, helping Knee change their legacy isn't until mid gate. We should have time to heal

Mountainking

The best use of the beast mark, imho, is to make up for the gates he lost to full body spells- so empowering the low level spells sounds like the right way to go to me.

I dont know, he has started learning patience and slowing down. The war root caused him serious hurt, and it allowed him to have the wisdom to not rush into the dragon's den without allies. If people's lives were on the line, I'd agree, but just for power? I don't know

Tobias Begley

Though honestly, I think that Malachi, if he had a choice without our influence , would go with detonation despite the risks. Not because he is power obsessed or completely thoughtless, but he is willing to take risks to make the most of opportunities for growth. He wants the power to do more for others and himself. That’s why he came up with the idea to detonate the stone in the first place and risked himself with the war root. Rushing to help the trapped spirits during the trial would also be the kind of thing he would choose automatically if no choice point was given. I love that he is the kind of person willing to risk himself to help others, and don’t want him to lose that side of himself to time. I just want him to treasure himself more and be a little more self protective.

Malachi could learn more spells, but they'd need to have a solid component of his existing mana types. They don't need to be purely of that type - for example, Surveyor's Eye uses knowledge, spatial, and tempest. Malachi only has spatial, but thanks to his full gate spells, he can cast it.

Tobias Begley

Edgar doesn't know what could happen, just that there are some risks.

Tobias Begley

They can be of any type... Kind of. The more complex, the better. The main draw is that Malachi can't cast any and all spells thanks to his full gate spells. They extend what he can do, but he still needs them to be rooted in his existing affinities. Magma Dragon's Breath, for example, is telluric/solar/desolation/creation/physical. He could never cast it. But he could select it as a beastgate spell

Tobias Begley

Very reasonable!

so,if im not mistaken the beast mark would allow Malaki to gain three more beast spells, one for 1st gate and 1 for second gate, and one of the third gate. These could be of any “mana type” (but actually are of beast mana which is a blend of mana types”) even ones he dosent have as long as Edgar has the spell. Did i get that right? Seems to me that long term gain says ether detonate or 4th gate as both give immediate power that is useful for a while, as the 4th gate would allow for useful power all the way though … 4th gate, while detonateing the stone would be useful a while longer still(assuming that this option is more powerful than all the others). Is their any unique effect that the beast mark grants that being a beast mage with his two full gate spells cannot acess, unique spells unique mana types? Two question, Edgar didnt say what the actual effect of detonating the stone for power would be is it a, you have to risk it to know situation? Also, since the results of the beast mark are just extra spells could Malakai just ask to learn the spells from Edgar directly without the mark, that would remove the need to put more pressure and likely give more options for spells, he could give Edgar the stone (or even keep it for himself and use it in his own way) and simply learn three or more spells (assuming he’s willing to stay in the village long enough to break through without the pressure) and he can even integrate them this way? Or did i misinterpret that Also, aslo, sorry for the super long comment this is leaveing me with a lot of questions.

I know that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and that risks can provide benefits, but I really think it is best to avoid something that could potentially have negative effects on his future development. Especially since we have no idea if the side effects could be mitigated or fixed. I would rather expand the mana core.
