The Calamity is the war between the Prime Deities and the Betrayer Gods. There is a lot of cool lore around it, like the Sun Tree in Whitestone is there because that is where Pelor, the sun god, struck down the most dangerous of the Betrayer gods. The valley where Whitestone sits in the mountain was created by the fallen god. And Pelor placed the Sun Tree there to mark the sport. It is also the same battle that the Knowing Mistress was badly wounded in and still healing from, centuries later.
This is also a post-apocalyptic world, still recovering from the Divergence about 840 years ago.
And while Percy is my favorite character that I identify with, Scanlan is my favorite character to watch in action, because Sam always comes up with amazing ways to shift the tide of battle. I would probably say that Scanlan was the MVP of campaign one, more than anyone else. And made me cry more times than I can remember to count.
I know it's a long shot, but a Patreon exclusive of watching Critical Role would be epic. At the very least watching Critical Role Exandria: Calamity would be great as it is only a 4 part series, about 17 hours total of gameplay,

Haha, you'd be perfect as a bard! You said you'd sing Kamaljiori a sad ballad about Osysa even before Scanlan started singing. Spot on! :D
Osysa mentioend briefly why she and her mate have to be apart during epsiode 2. They each guard important knowledge tied to their Goddess, the Knowing Mistress. She was wounded by a Betrayer God during the Calamity and is recovering in a secret place.
If the sphinxes were together, that secret place would risk getting found out by minions of the Betrayer Gods that seeks to finish the job and kill the Knowing Mistress for good.
Grog was a member of the Herd of Storms before he was adopted by Pike and her great-great-grandfather (gnomes live a long time). Kevdak is the leader of the Herd. That is all I will say for now. :)
The challenge Kamaljiori set them in the campaign was very different, involving puzzles where they had to figure his name out. So seeming him just introduce himself in the animation was a very funny "Wait, WTF!?" moment for me. I love the change though, and Scanlan's power ballad was amazing.
Oh, and Unbrasyl didn't show up then either. One of the Chroma Conclave getting a Vestige is probably quite bad news, so we'll see what happens there.
