The Legend of Vox Machina 2x3 | The Sunken Tomb | Full Reaction/Review

The twins go back and forth a bit, but both have pretty severe codependency issues. Vex'ahlia is mainly afraid that if Vax'ildan falls in love he won't always be there for her because he won't put her first anymore, and that scares her a lot. Vax'ildan is mainly afraid of being abandoned and alone. He doesn't do well on his own, and Vex'ahlia has been his heart and his home for all of their lives, even when they bicker and argue. Vox Machina is gradually changing that, mostly for the better, but it's not always an easy adjustment to go through. The novel with the twins, which takes place a year or two before they meet Vox Machina is called Kith and Kin. It's available both as a regular book and as an audiobook. In the world of Exandria, or rather Syngorn specifically, elves are not a monolith, so there is variety in how they view halfbloods. In Uthodern in Wildemount for example, elves and dwarves live in an intermingled society and halfbloods are not looked down upon. Syngorn on the other hand is a fully elven city, and while not all of them look down on halfbloods it does have a substantial population of elven supremacists who think of non-elves as, well, fine in their own right but lesser than elves. Unfortunately the twins' father Syldor is one of those elf supremacists. I doubt his dalliance with their mother was more than a pleasant distraction while out traveling for him. This bits about his motivation for taking the twins into his house here is extrapolation on my part, so take it with a grain of salt. Going by campaign canon, we do know Syldor wasn't married or had any full elven children of his own when he learned of Vex and Vax's existence. I suspect he took them in as a way to gain some power and prestige in Syngorn, despite their half-blood status. They would of course be ever so grateful to be taken in by an elven ambassador, and if he could train them up well they could be useful agents of his house. However, because of his attitude, nothing they did was good enough for him and the relationship gradually soured and turned outright emotionally abusive until the twins left. In the campaign Syldor later married an elf and Vex'ahlia and Vax'ildan has a younger, fully elven half-sister. It seems that daughter mellowed Syldor somewhat, and he didn't resent the twins as much, just hoping they would do well for themselves and mostly keep out of his life. Of course, for the twins there was still a lot of bitter resentment left. And we'll see in the future how the animation deals with all of this. :)
