Drama Exchange: Deep-dive zone (Feb 2024)

Hi everyone!

Here's your Deep Dive zone for February!

Thanks to Trent for suggesting and implementing the new SPOILER convention, where you announce your spoiler in a first level comment, then write your actual spoiler (while still announcing it's a spoiler) in a reply to your first level comment.

This makes it much easier for folks to browse the Deep Dive, without necessarily having to scroll through walls of text that they're trying not to read. 😅

Have fun chatting dramas, everyone!

For spoiler-free discussions, you can go here!

KFG ❤️

CTK ep 14 spoilers ***************** IF THE LIPSTICK IS POISONED, WHY DOESN'T IT KILL HER FIRST? IF IT HAS TO GET INTO THE BLOODSTREAM (speculation), WHAT IS SHE SUPPOSED TO DO, BITE HIM?!! Make it make sense!!!

Captivating the King, ep. 14 spoilers

wasn't sure if i should move this to no spoiler zone, but will keep it here ~ meant to also note that i've only seen Park Ji Bin as young Yi San in the show with the same name (2007, the show i am very slowly finishing on-and-off), so it was very fascinating to see him here! saw some people mention his performance in Blind, which i haven't seen

[no spoilers just show check-in] just stopping by to say i started A Shop For Killers two days ago, because of the amount of mentions here. managed to mostly keep myself from reading spoilers and go in without knowing much. (didn't even watch the trailer) would've finished if I didn't have to attend to other things, but already at E5 😝 definitely hooked. behind on all the threads, but a lot to process already in terms of how things are unfolding so far. i think i will definitely need to read the related deep dives afterwards 👀

1. I am just curious on the age aspects of both the leads. I get that the ML's family died when he was 10 years old (at the time of King's death) and then he spent the next 15 years with the Royal Secretary Officer's family as an adopted person. Now wrt the FL - I get that she was married at the same time (maybe 6 months later after the King's death) and she also spent that 15 years as a widow. So can I safely assume that she would have been 14 years at least at the time of her marriage or was it the case of a child marriage. And am I safe to assume that there is at least an age gap of 3 or 4 years between the leads with FL being older than the ML. And was this acceptable in those times. Again just being curious as I really enjoyed the lead pair together and if my assumption is correct this will be a noona romance done so very well and so organically. 2. Am I the only one who thought that the height difference between the Royal Secretary Officer and FL's helper (Bong Daek) was so jarring. I mean why did they have to cast this way. Any specific reasons. I do know that there is a huge age difference between them (as it was common in history) but the height difference for me was super-weird. 3. Also I thought Kim Mi-kyung was wasted in that role as MIL. And when the FL towards the end says that she found her MIL very affable and that she could endure those 15 years of tough widowhood because of her kindness - I literally rolled my eyes. really...is that kindness..if any I thought the MIL was harsh on her DIL by making her pray and not eat and what not to get the chastity gate. Or did I miss something good about the MIL. or am I having higher standards for MIL. this one was confusing really. thanks in advance 🙏

Knight Flower - some questions - can anyone help - has SPOILERS though

Sigh. I liked the start of this episode cos Lee Yin appeared to go into investigative overdrive, feeling that it is high time now to force his brother’s murderer(s) to the surface. But after making oblique threats to his mother and asking Court Lady Dong, he then does nothing more about the investigation. I felt “not bad” about Mong Woo working with the Queen to get the Grand Prince to be made the Crown Prince but it seemed very opportunistic, what if the Queen hadn’t asked, and what if the lightning hadn’t struck the tree, what would Mong Woo’s plan have been then? And ugh such a Kdrama trope that someone is hiding and then two people stop right outside the hiding spot to have a heated and incriminating conversation, right where the person hiding can hear them. I was like, dudes, every other conversation you’ve had has been sitting down in a proper room, why are you suddenly talking in the garden? So this whole last part of the episode to me was very very tropey. The overheard convo, FL giving green light to the assassination plot and then ugh she stops him at the last minute. So tropey!! I would like to see her actually stop and analyse the political situation for once, instead of just meddling and executing plots without weighing the pros and cons, and considering whether she can stomach the consequences! Emotional decision-making. I’m beginning to think the Show’s writer is actually very chauvinist and not willing to believe women can be strategic and capable.
