@MC - I think you asked me about Secret Romantic???? It was fun in the beginning and then went all Saeguk on me towards the end which there was no way it couldnt, but FOR ONCE its WASNT the LSC! Who knew such a thing existed? Anyways, It was ok? I enjoyed this different premise and good acting from everyone. Your boy Kang Hoon shines as usual :)

Oh oh! I talked so much about the premise that I forgot to shout out faces I recognise!!!! From Singapore - Chin Han as Jin's father From Malaysia - Yeo Yann Yann as Jin's mother (she also starred in a number of critically acclaimed Spore films, she's great) AND OF COURSE MICHELLE YEOH, GODDESS OF THE SCREEN PLAYING A LITERAL GODDESS - Guanyin Goddess of Mercy!!! From Hong Kong - Daniel Wu playing Sun Wukong say what?! Haha From the US by way of Vietnam - Ke Huy Quan - playing a slapstick stereotypical Chinese character, let's see whether this character develops further

I just watched the first episode of American Born Chinese, and it's great, I'm really impressed! OK the first couple of minutes are like xianxia with not great CGI and wirefu, but it's to set the mythological parallel universe, divine-realm conflict involving Sun Wukong and the Bull Demon, which intrudes on our real world, i.e. our main character, American-Born Chinese boy Jin's everyday life in a (predominantly white) American high school. The high school outcast story (and a minority outcast) has been done before but I think it's done really well here. We already see Jin's conflicts - to blend in, be one of the cool people, but at what cost to his own sense of self and friendships with other people who may be more true friends, but unfortunately are also in the outcast realm. I kind of find it refreshing to have such a frank take on racism and the adolescent angst of fitting in, multiplied by the anxiety of wanting to defy racial stereotypes of your whole ethnic/language group. As opposed to other recent high school shows which tend to have "race-blind" casting i.e. race doesn't seem to be such an issue of conflict and everyone in the high school seems to be very accepting of different races. (e.g. To All the Boys I've Loved Before, Ms Marvel). This is on Disney+, it's definitely released in the US and I'm watching it in Singapore, so I guess it's a worldwide release? Just 8 episodes of about 32-45 min each.
