When The Phone Rings - Ep. 12 | REACTION

Welp, that's it! Another drama down, and I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on this one and the drama altogether down below y'all!

Thanks so much for watching this series with me!

I'm late to the party on this but I just finished the video and I honestly didn't mind this episode. It would have been weird if the conflict stuff came out of no where but they did mention that this is how he started and what he did before his presidential stuff, and I think it was tonally consistent with the rest of the season. I do agree that it did feel a little rushed but I don't even know what else you would do to be honest. I also didn't mind we didn't see a wedding (I would have rather have seen the proposal), I think showing their personal growth was more important and I think they did that well, especially with Heejoo. But honestly, it's like you said at the end of episode 11 that this IS a tropy show but again, with those tropes I honestly think they did it well. Last thing I'll say is that the "I need to punish myself" is irritating HOWEVER I was expecting it so it didn't really surprise me lol, so again, I was just able to watch without it bothering me at all. Anywho, I quite enjoyed this. Not sure it would make my top 10, BUT I really enjoyed the watching experience of each and every episode.

I finished to wrap my thoughts and overall, it still is one of my favorite show of the year. The last episode was by far the weakest and they probably tried too hard to watch the manhwa but we could have done without few of the events in that episode and close the Sa-eon punishing himself quicker without the whole Argan plot. I liked how they ended the show for the mom. She needed to be a villain and not just an emotional mom who's turning a blind eye. Like okay, sure Sa-eon feels bad, let him go doing good deeds for a month or so and then just go to the point. I really didn't need the Argan plot, give me more Yuri and Sangwoo, give me a redemption for Dojae, give me more of Ina, show me the damn marriage. Don't just show it to me that it's all good now.

First great reactions for this drama I love hearing what you think. On to the s show. I was ready for tons of cringe but Aragon seriously. If they chucked that part other things could have been fleshed out more. I like weddings even a piece of one would have been nice. Seeing Sang-woo and Yu-ri's romance would have been nice as well. Tell me how Do-jae got out of jail so quick for goodness sakes. Flipping Aragon. Also it is a landlocked territory so I guess the beach was on the river that has mostly forest around it (I looked it up it was irritating me). Anyway at least they didn't kill either of them off, but they worked hard trying to kill the drama. IMO which doesn't say much.

I'll just say that this last episode made my rating for this drama go from 10 to 9. I don't have a problem with a time skip, I'm used to them. I just really disliked the way they did it here - you are right, this was out of place and overly dramatic to me - war zone, her being kidnapped for a long time... like wtf... also tbh I didn't like what that says about his character all of a sudden - like having some sort of redemption arc when it isn't needed - like it just makes me frustrated. We just needed a nice closure of everything and that was it. I feel like I should treat episode 11 as the final episode at this point.

So, I don't mind that ML disappeared, because it was something properly foreshadowed in this kdrama, but I wish they got rid of this whole Argan storyline. Although I admit probably should've known better. I've already rewatched episodes 1 and 2 to cope with WTPR already ending, and Argan was mentioned in the first episode. The details in this kdrama continue to amaze me, but if they gave us 5 minutes of fluff after all of this, I'd be so mad. Yes, they unfortunatelly kept the ending fron the novel after making so many positive changes in this adaptation so I didn't see that coming. Because I felt like we had no time for this. It's set up better in the source material, but I never like that ending. Hee Joo has been so delusional from the start. A compilation of her dreams and imagination could be a substiute for an episode of a soap opera. Even the kidnapper was so interesting. Even though he started as a typical villan, he got so much depth in the second part of the story, that I did pity him at times. I feel that if he didn't come from a highly influential family that only cared for the image, he might a least got some help as a kid. I didn't want him dead. I wanted him punished and locked up. I love their new home with many pictures. It's so obvious the only kept the realest people around. I'm glad Mr Kang got an upgrade from a co-worker to a friend. I love the fact that her mother doesn't even know where they live. I hoped for at least one more childhood flasback scene and more screentime and development for the second leads. Also, I was pretty sure we'll see a proper wedding, but it was only in pictures and it seems they kept it a secret from many people. With all that being said It's still my favorite kdrama from last year. One weak episode won't change that. Too bad it was the last one. If anyone is looking for another kdrama with mystery, investigation and beautiful romance I highly recommend Suspicious Partner.

This was a 10/10 drama for me I loved it. It's one of my favorite dramas ever

I feel more for Gyujin than I did for Heejoo's mom last episode. Like damn, her life in the Paik family sucked but she was also such a shitty person. Ui-yong deserved a worse fate but alas. Yeaaaah the middle of this episode is really where it fell flat. And that's saying something since the rest of this show has been stellar. 100% there should've been more Youri/Sangwoo. They were literally in the beginnings of their relationship and to just suddenly say they're engaged is mad. Mad I tell you! They didn't even go on a DATE. We were ROBBED. To be honest, I love all the conclusions. (Ina and Heejoo truly reconciling their relationship that was fractured only because they were children and were surrounded by terrible adults was so refreshing to see from a kdrama.) The writers really dropped the ball at the penultimate path to getting to all the endings though. Whatever OG Saeon told Saeon should've been something unknown to us. All that tension and for what? 52:20 literally same. Argan is definitely way too unbelievable even for this drama lol All in all, I'm picky with my dramas and more so on my recommends, (and usually if a show doesn't end well I would never rec it to someone) but I'd still tell people to watch When the Phone Rings. The emotional rollercoaster is too much of a ride to not share. Satisfying comeuppance and a happy ending? The journey was way too fun. Adding it to my fav drama list? Id have to take a rain check on that answer but thats just me. Overall, this show was pretty damn great! Definitely looking out for future projects from all the casts! They did so well!

your reaction at 47:28 was LITERALLY ME LMAOOO. Eps 1-11 were perfection, idek why they had to add this unnecessary Argan arc to the finale... when the same conversation could've taken place in their living room.

When the most memorable development for a main character in final episode is 'he's made peace with the fish' ... someone's f-ed things up! But, seriously, what was this?! I am sorry, I am never going to buy him leaving her like that. I've grown to love this character so much and then they give me the most out-of-character thing he could've possibly done in the last episode? He's kept an eye on her for years, a whole damn decade, his whole purpose became to somehow protect her and all of the sudden, he's gone, she's falling apart and there's no one to pick up the pieces?! To punish himself?! wtAf He didn't have to go anywhere to be distant... This could've been done so much more realistically by having him just go back to what he does best - hiding his true emotions. But still be there for her, until it all erupts in an angsty conversation and well... you know. It might not have been with a beach view, but I doubt anyone would complain. The whole thing started going downhill from the moment they reunited in episode 11. We never addressed the fact she just tried to drive off a cliff for him. We are talking about Sa-eon who broke into tears because she was cold and 'she must drink water' and then... this?! 😤 I want to make perfectly clear that I don't mind the feelings he's feeling. None of that 'he's obligated to act like this and feel this, she's obligated to act like this and feel this'. After shitty lives these two have had, any mix of emotions they tell me they feel - I say ok. And that is why it's even more unnecessary to invent stupid plots for extra tension (and fail) when there's loads of tension already. I will say though... Both of them were soooo good as BSE and HHJ that they almost sold me this. But the fatal flaw here is that he would never ever not think about her first and that is why this sh** just won't fly. I apologize for the rant and the wall of text. There really is a lot more I have issues with, but I'll stop myself here... I came for WTPR, but I will definitely stick around. It has been an amazing journey, even with the the whole G.I.Joe debacle. 🤭

100% agree with you at the end. While I appreciate the "happy" ending, there could've been more detail given from the events of the previous episode. Like obviously I assume the cops shot the real Saeon, but show it please. If you can show the dream you can show the true outcome. Same with dad, show what happened there. And I agree, it makes no sense going to Argan. That's where it really fell flat for me, I get that we were trying to tie it back to ep 1 but it wasn't necessary. Like you said, we could've done all this stuff in Korea. Still a pretty solid drama though. Looking forward to watching more from these actors as well.

I agree with you for the most part. The middle fifteen minutes were the worst of the series, as was this episode. They did fall in the classic trope of trying to do much with too little time left - and the entire Argan bit was unnecessary. Still, I think the acting was really spot on - both the leads and the side characters. It's going to be a 9 for me - but I'd grade the ending at like a 5. It's lucky the rest of the episodes were just so good and the acting was stellar.

GeminiLightning

We need a damn tracker under the skin for Hee Joo. Girl got even kidnapped in her first 24 hours in a new country

Will Zertit

To be honest I just can’t take that part in Argan seriously. It was just so dumb and unnecessary. The whole plot with Saeon being “gone” could have been resolved during the first 20 minutes of the episode and the rest just them being together, as well as Yuri and Sangwoo and the rest of the cast. So I have to agree that this ep was kinda dissapointing. I still loved this drama tho and more importantly I loved watching your reactions!

Helen

oh and i had so much fun watching with you! i originally only joined for this series, but i will definitely be following along in the next series!

apparently, from what i have gathered, the whole argan plot makes more sense in the novel (haven't read it so i wouldnt know). i do agree that it was kinda dumb... id rather had seen it end with the kidnapper getting shot and then the rest of the episode being all lovey dovey + plus we were robbed of seeing yuri and sangwoos relationship come to be.. i was expecting them to at least start showing interest in each other but nope, we're suddenly getting married. like where did that come from.. i would still give this a 10/10 tho. the rest of the episodes were just too good not to. imma just pretend that ep 12 does not exist cause it is definitely the weakest out of all episodes. (but i'm lowkey really glad that they did not manage to get to the amnesia trope cause if there's one thing i hate more than suddenly entering war zones, its amnesia)
